Off Duty Brantford Police Officer Arrests 3 Youths- Arson
May 15, 2012
(12-18051)
A Brantford Police Officer is being credited with preventing further damage and destruction to new homes under construction.
On Saturday May 12, 2012 around 8:00 p.m. an off duty Brantford Police observed 3 youths leaving a home on Lambert Crescent. The Officer approached and arrested the youths after observing them on a path of destruction. The youths had been inside a home which was still under construction and tipped over a port-a-potty.
The home which had been entered by the three youths had also filled with smoke. Three separate fires had been set on the upper level. The fire department attended and also located a smoldering broom in the basement.
One youth was found to be in possession of a lighter and a package of cigarettes. Further investigation revealed that there was a second home under construction in the area which was damaged.
As a result of this investigation on May 14, 2012 two 12 year old youths and one 13 year old were charged with Break and Enter, Arson and Mischief over $5, 000.00.
The Brantford Police are urging parents to speak with their children in regards to this incident, and remind them to never go into an abandoned building. Notwithstanding the cost to owners for repairing damage to property there is a risk to the fire starters. The children setting the fires could become trapped in a building and overcome by smoke.
Citizens with information regarding these matters are asked to contact Detective Jim Sawkins at 519-756-0113 ext 2273 or Detective Dave Minutillo at 519-756-0113 ext 2266.

Brantford Police Participate in 2012 Canada Road Safety Week
May 15, 2012
May 14-21, 2012, marks Canada Road Safety Week, a national campaign to make
Canada's roads the safest in the world.
The focus during Canada Road Safety Week will be on behaviours that reduce risks for drivers, passengers and other road users: sober and alert driving, seat belt use, and refraining from all aspects of aggressive driving. This week has been strategically chosen, as it is the first "summer" long weekend. People are traveling more and traffic collisions are more frequent.
The Brantford Police Service will join the numerous other police agencies across Canada in participating in this road safety initiative. It is an enforcement-driven initiative designed to increase public compliance with safe driving measures and ultimately, to save lives. Educating the public in safe driving practices is a priority.
"Anyone can become a victim of unsafe driving. Whether it is direct involvement or association through a loved one." says Media Relations Officer Nat Laing. "Police agencies across the country are joining together on this project because they have seen the devastation, and know that this initiative is essential to achieve safer streets and highways."
In Brantford, there have been 5 deaths and 12 serious injuries since 2010 related to vehicle collisions. These are just numbers; however they represent a lot of pain and heartache for members of our community.
The Brantford Police Service will be performing strict enforcement within our City. Citizens can expect to see an increase in RIDE checks, speed, unsafe motor vehicle, and aggressive driving enforcement in the City of Brantford. Police vehicles will be stationed at key locations to remind people that safe driving habits save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways.
Canada Road Safety Week is sponsored by Transport Canada and endorsed by police and is part of “Road Safety Strategy 2015”, which has a goal of making Canada's roads the safest in the world.

Police Warning Community To Protect Themselves From Email And “Phishing Scams”
The Brantford Police Fraud Unit has received several reports in regards to victims of “Phishing Scams” and wants to remind everyone of the importance of internet safety and fraud education.
The word phishing (fishing) comes from the analogy that Internet scammers are using email lures to 'fish' for passwords and financial data from the sea of Internet users.
An example of one such phishing e-mail is an email received from a fictional bank disguised as an official bank. The fraudster is pretending to be a legitimate organization asking for personal information including your PIN (personal identification number). The email will look real possibly having a similar looking logo and official company web page link. The sender will notify you that the company is changing or updating your personal information. The sender will notify you that there has been a suspension with your account or credit card, until you provide and confirm your confidential personal information. It is common that the email will begin with “Dear Client”. Always check if the sender is responding to you personally, for example your full name and correct spelling.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM BEING A VICTIM:
• Never send personal and/or financial information over an unsecured email
• While surfing the Web, do not click on pop-up windows or respond to emails from an address you are not familiar with
• When contacted about your personal accounts never click on a web link attached to the email to ‘verify’ or confirm’
• Delete emails from unknown sources
• Educate yourself by visiting the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website at www.antifraudcentre.ca
Detective Mark POLISCHUK from the Brantford Police Fraud Unit reminds everyone that your bank already has your personal information; they will not solicit you for further information.
If you have already sent funds and/or your personal information contact the police and your financial institution immediately. If you believe that you have been a VICTIM OF FRAUD and reside in the City of Brantford, contact the Brantford Police Service at 519-756-7050.
