On Sunday, February 6, 2022, at approximately 11:00 a.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service were dispatched to attend a report of a possible impaired driver.
A concerned citizen called 9-1-1 when a driver in a Colborne
Street fast-food drive-thru lane was allegedly observed smoking cannabis while
operating his vehicle.
Officers arrived on scene and located the suspect vehicle. In speaking with the driver, officers observed signs of intoxication. Drug paraphernalia was also observed within the vehicle.
As a result of the observations made by police, the accused was arrested for Operation while Impaired and transported to conduct a Drug Recognition Evaluation where it was determined that the accused’s ability to operate a vehicle was impaired.
As a result of the investigation a 33-year-old man from Brantford stands charged with:
- Have care or control of a vehicle with cannabis readily available, contrary to the Cannabis Control Act
- Operation while impaired, contrary to the Criminal Code
Additionally, a license suspension was issued, and the vehicle impounded as per law.

Location: Wayne Gretzky Parkway
On Saturday, February 5, 2022, at approximately 2:15 a.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a possible impaired driver in the area of Wayne Gretzky Parkway and Grey Street.
Officers attended and located the vehicle which had mounted the curb with the driver still occupying the driver’s seat.
In speaking with the accused, officers observed signs of impairment. The accused was arrested for Impaired Operation and transported to provide samples of breath as required by law.
Both samples provided were over twice the legal limit.
As a result, a 47-year-old man from Hamilton stands charged with the following Criminal Code violations:
- Impaired Operation
- Impaired Operation – plus 80
Additionally, a license suspension was issued, and the vehicle impounded as per law.

On Saturday, February 5, 2022, at approximately 1:15 a.m., patrol officers with the Brantford Police service observed a vehicle strike a large snowbank at the end of George Street, near Durham Street.
A male exited the driver seat of the vehicle, while a second male exited the front passenger seat and left the area on foot.
While speaking with the driver, officers observed signs of impairment and the man was arrested for Impaired Operation.
The accused was transported to provide samples of breath as required by law. Both samples provide were over twice the legal limit.
A search incident to arrest of the vehicle located approximately 24.85 grams of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of $1900, a scale, and drug packaging materials.
As a result of the investigation, Xavier SAMUELS, 31, of Hamilton, stands charged with the following offences:
- Operation While Impaired, contrary to the Criminal Code
- 80 plus, contrary to the Criminal Code
- Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking - Schedule I, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
Additionally, a license
suspension was issued, and the vehicle impounded as per law.
The accused was held for a bail hearing.

On Friday, February 4, 2022, at approximately 12:40 a.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service were dispatched to attend a hit and run, reported to have occurred on West Street near Duke Street.
Officers received information to advise that a vehicle had hit two
parked cars on West Street and continued onto Fleet Street without stopping at
the scene.
A witness had advised a male driver was observed passed out at the
wheel, with airbags deployed.
Upon arrival, officers located a man unconscious behind the wheel of the
vehicle, which was still running. The man appeared to be suffering from an
overdose.
Officers administered Narcan nasal spray and successfully revived the
man.
A male passenger within the vehicle also appeared to be suffering from
an overdose and was administered Narcan and revived by officers.
Both men were transported to hospital for medical assessment and
treatment.
At the time of the incident, the passenger (co-accused) was found to be
in possession of approximately 2.5 grams of suspected Fentanyl and was
determined to be in violation of two outstanding arrest warrants.
During search incident to arrest, the driver (accused) was found to be
in possession of approximately 35.8 grams of suspected Fentanyl.
As a result, the accused, Robert Frank VANEVERY,
26, of Ohsweken, stands charged with the following:
- Operation while Impaired, contrary to the Criminal Code
- Possession for the Purpose, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
- Fail to remain, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
- Drive Motor Vehicle - No Licence, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
The co-accused, Jamal Luqman SEWELL, 22, of
Brantford, stands charged with:
- Possession for the Purpose, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
Both parties were held for bail and the vehicle impounded as per law.
