Canada Road Safety Week 2021

May 18, 2021

Today marks the beginning of Canada Road Safety Week, a 7-day national campaign aimed at making Canada's roads the safest in the world. This annual awareness campaign is designed to increase public compliance with safe driving measures in order to save lives and reduce injuries on Canada’s roads. The focus of this campaign continues to be on behaviours that put drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users at risk: impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and not wearing a seatbelt.

Canadians have a number of reasons they use to justify adopting unsafe driving behaviours and this year’s campaign challenges them to truly assess the risks of the decisions they make. Is it really worth speeding to get to your destination only a few minutes earlier? Is it really worth driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs because some of the alternatives may be more inconvenient for you? Is it really worth driving when you’re nodding off at the wheel? Is the momentary thrill of road racing really worth taking the deadly risks associated with dangerous and careless driving?

Each unsafe driving behaviour behind the wheel involves the potential risk of fines, suspensions, impounds, injuries, or even death. You could lose your money, points, your license, your vehicle, your physical or mental capacities, your wages or your life. Worse yet … you could be taking all these away from others you share the road with. Whatever the reason, there is no excuse that justifies an unsafe driving behaviour. It is simply #NotWorthTheRisk

We want local residents to remember that the decisions they make, and the consequences of their actions, don’t just affect them. They impact their family and community too.

The Brantford Police Service is proud to be participating in this year’s Canada Road Safety Campaign. While this public safety initiative is part of a national effort to help advance Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2025 to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world, we are confident that our local efforts will help make the roads here in Brantford among the safest in Canada.

Brantford Police Service Celebrating Police Week

May 6, 2021

Front-line Police Officers and Police Personnel Continue to Service in Extraordinary Times to Keep Communities Safe

The Brantford Police Service is joining police services across Ontario and Canada in kicking off Police Week (#PoliceWeekON), which honours and celebrates the work front-line police officers, 9-1-1 communicators, civilian staff, and all members of our police service do to keep our citizens safe and healthy, especially during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, Police Week runs from May 9 to 15, 2021. The theme for the week is "Working Together to Keep our Communities Safe,” which highlights the commitment of police services to develop partnerships that enhance the safety and well-being of everyone in our communities.

Police Week was first observed in 1970 and coincides with the Peace Officers Memorial Day, which is recognized internationally on May 15. This year, we honour our police officers and personnel for the extraordinary work they do every day in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. The current lockdown means that police personnel will not be able to engage with community members as they have traditionally done during Police Week. This year we are inviting the public to reach out through social media or other means that use appropriate social distancing to thank our police officers and members for all they do to keep our communities safe.

Throughout this week, Brantford Police Service will be highlighting the many ways in which our members continue to serve our community. We will also be acknowledging how our members are working closely with health care professionals and other first responders to protect our citizens during this pandemic. During Police Week, we encourage community members to say, ‘Thank You!’ to our hardworking officers and police personnel.

The annual Police Week in Ontario is sponsored by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) and the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General. It is part of the National Police Week led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police.

Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Exploitation on the Internet

On March 29, 2007, alongside the OPP Child Exploitation Section and 26 other municipal police services, the Brantford Police Service joined the Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Exploitation on the Internet.

The Brantford Police Service supports this strategy, and has recognized that images of children and child abuse placed on the internet lead to perpetual victimization.

This project has been made possible by a grant from the Ministry of the Solicitor General.

Internet Safety Tips

Brantford Police Service is committed to ensuring the safety of our community’s children and taking action against online sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of children. The following information is provided to assist parents and caregivers to understand internet safety.
  • Consider creating an internet contract with your child and have all parties sign it.
  • Let your child know that you will be monitoring their online activities.
  • Reinforce the fact that not everyone is who they say they are online.
  • Discuss how pictures should not be sent or posted online without parental permission.
  • Discuss sharing personal information online; never share their password with anyone other than their parents. Review the risks of personal information being misused online.
  • Use only child-safe search engines such as: www.askkids.com www.kidsyahoo.com or www.kidsclick.org
  • Encourage your child to trust in their instincts and stop, block, and tell if they are uncomfortable.
  • Talk to your child about the consequences of being involved in any incidents that include cyberbullying, sexting, etc.
  • Make sure your child understands that they can talk to you about anything on the internet.

As a parent, what can you do?

  • Place your child’s computer in a common area. Set expectations for your child’s online and cell phone activities.
  • Monitor your child’s activities online. Ask your child to show you what they are doing online, and be aware of whom they are talking to.
  • Retrieve your child’s login information, e-mail addresses and password.
  • If your child joins any social networking or gaming sites, help them create their online profile. Remember to only fill in information that is necessary and leave out any revealing information.
  • Monitor ALL webcam use, and any posting or exchanging of pictures online.
  • Do not allow your child to communicate in chat rooms.
  • Use filtering software on computers.
  • Communicate openly with your child. Encourage them to report any situation or information that makes them feel uncomfortable.
