CRIME BRIEF: February 27, 2023

Type:              Stunt Driving
Incident:       23-08627
Location:      Hardy Road and Wright Street

On Monday, February 27, 2023, at approximately 7:15 a.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service were conducting speed enforcement on Wright Street at Hardy Road when a motorist was observed travelling at a high rate of speed. 

The motor vehicle was recorded travelling at 105 km/hr in a 50km/hr zone.

A traffic stop was initiated and as a result, a 20-year-old man from Brantford stands charged with the following:
  • Driver motor vehicle preform stunt - speeding by 40 or more km/hr in a zone that is less than 80 km/hr and
  • Speeding - travelling 105 Km/h in a posted 50 km/h zone contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
 
Additionally, the vehicle was impounded, and the driver’s licence was suspended for 30 days.

Incident:       23-07791
Location:      Brant Avenue

On Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at approximately 7:45 p.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service were dispatched to attend a motor vehicle collision at Brant Avenue and West Street involving two vehicles.

Officers attended and in speaking with the driver of one of the vehicles, observed signs of impairment. 

The accused was arrested and transported to provide samples of breath as required by law. The accused was found to be impaired by alcohol.

As a result, a 73-year-old man from Brantford stands charged with the following Criminal Code violation:
  • Impaired Operation
 
Additionally, the driver’s licence of the accused was suspended, and the car impounded.
 

 
Type:              Residential Property Theft
Incident:       23-07573
Location:      Cumberland Street

On Saturday, February 18, 2023, at approximately 5:30 p.m. officers with the Brantford Police Service received a report that coin-operated laundry machines within a residential building on Cumberland Street had been damaged, and money stolen.

The suspect, who appeared on video surveillance, was identified, and subsequently located by police and arrested. Information received indicated the accused was in violation of valid probation order.

As a result, a 41-year-old man from Brantford stands charged with the following Criminal Code violations:
  • Theft Under $5,000 
  • Mischief Under $5,000 x 2
  • Breach Probation

Location:      Grand River Ave

On Sunday, February 19, 2023, at approximately 8:30 a.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service were dispatched after receiving a call to advise of a possible impaired driver in a vehicle blocking traffic on Grand River Avenue.

The caller advised that the vehicle was running, in drive, with the driver’s foot on the brake. The caller advised that the driver appeared to be asleep behind the wheel.

Officers arrived on scene and located the subject vehicle and driver. A "bong” was located in clear view of the officer and the driver showed signs of impairment.

The accused was placed under arrest for impaired operation (drug) and was subsequently read the drug recognition evaluation demand. 

A drug recognition expert evaluation was performed with the evaluating officer forming the opinion that the accused was impaired.

Furthermore, approximately 27.8 grams of cannabis and approximately 1.9 grams of hash were located within reach of the driver.

As a result of the investigation, a 22-year-old female from Brampton stands charged with the following: 
  • Operation While Impaired contrary to the Criminal Code and
  • Have Care or Control of Vehicle with Cannabis Readily Available contrary to the Cannabis Control Act 

Additionally, the driver’s licence of the accused was suspended, and the car impounded.
 

Community partnership launched to prevent catalytic converter thefts

The Brantford Police Service has seen an increase in catalytic converter thefts. Through a community partnership with Midas Brantford, APC, and Crime Stoppers Brant-Brantford, it is our goal to create awareness of this issue and work to boost crime prevention efforts.   

A catalytic converter is a part of a vehicle’s exhaust system which reduces polluting emissions. They contain precious metals which make them valuable to thieves. Over the last four years, the Brantford Police Service has received nearly 300 reports of stolen catalytic converters.

Midas Brantford, is offering a new theft deterrent technique specific to catalytic converters, which involves a specialized, bright paint and engraving of the converters. Paint and engraving tools are generously being provided by APC.
Offered free to the community, Midas Brantford, is providing a limited number of appointments to members of the public to help deter thefts of catalytic converters. Appointments for businesses (at a nominal cost) will be available in the future. 

Appointments are limited and are being offered Saturday, March 11, and Monday, March 13, 2023. Appointments will be offered on a first come-first serve basis. There is no cost to participate. Future appointments may be offered at a later date.

BPS arrest 26-year-old Brantford man for luring and child pornography related offences

As a result of an investigation launched in January 2023 by the Brantford Police Service, a 26-year-old Brantford man is facing a number of luring and child pornography related charges. 

Investigators with the Brantford Police Service are seeking assistance with any information involving the accused, Clayton STEWART, 26, of Brantford, due to the belief there may be more victims.  

As a result of the investigation, a Clayton STEWART, 26, from Brantford stands charged with the following:
  • Luring a Person – three counts
  • Making Child Pornography
  • Possession of Child Pornography
  • Access Child Pornography
  • Sexual Assault
  • Sexual Interference
  • Invitation to Sexual Touching
 
Additional details cannot be released due to the existence of a publication ban.

BPS arrest two men, seize loaded firearm and $112,400 in illegal drugs after foot chase

After a short foot chase with BPS officers arrested two men and seized a firearm and approximately $112,000 in illegal drugs.

On Thursday, February 16, 2023, at approximately 10:45 a.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service received a call to report a possible stolen vehicle in the area of Clarence Street and Grey Street. A description of two male suspects was provided to police by an alert citizen. 

Officers attended and confirmed that the licence plates on the subject vehicle had been previously reported as stolen from another jurisdiction. 

One male suspect was arrested at the scene and one male suspect fled on foot. It was reported that he was in possession of a firearm. 

After a short foot pursuit, the suspects were quickly located and arrested by members of the BPS uniformed patrol with the assistance of the Emergency Response Team. A loaded, restricted firearm was seized, and stolen plates recovered.   

Search incident to arrest located the following:
  • Approximately 262 grams of suspected fentanyl with an estimated street value of $104,800 
  • Approximately 76 grams of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of $7,600
  • Multiple cell phones and weigh scales 
 
The total street value of seized drugs located on the accused was $112,400.

During the incident, a nearby school was temporarily placed into a hold and secure as a precautionary measure.

As a result of this investigation, Cadane SLATER, 22, from Toronto stands charged with the following Criminal Code violation:
  • Prohibited Device - Magazine
  • Careless Use of a Firearm 
  • Carry in Unsafe Manner 
  • Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Carry Concealed Weapon
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm 
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Firearm in a Motor Vehicle
  • Possession of Prohibited/Restricted Firearm/Ammunition
  • Possession of Stolen Goods Under $5,000
  • Possession for the Purpose Schedule 1-Cocaine, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act 
  • Possession for the Purpose Schedule 1 -Fentanyl, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act 

And Romaine LEE, 33, from Brantford stands charged with the following Criminal Code violation:
  • Possession of stolen property under $5000 

Both men are to be held for bail.

BPS arrest two Brantford men with weapons and assault related charges

After continued investigation, detectives with the Brantford Police Service arrested two men believed responsible for a February 8, 2023, assault at a Darling Street residence and a February 9, 2023, break and enter at an Albion Street residence.

On February 8, 2023, a verbal dispute occurred between the two accused and the female victim at the Darling Street residence when it is alleged that the victim was assaulted and forcibly held at gunpoint. 

On February 9, 2023, the victim found her residence had been broken into, and a number of items stolen and damaged.  

An investigation was initiated when the incidents were reported to the Brantford Police Service, February 9, 2023.  

Brantford police investigators, with the assistance of the BPS Emergency Response Team, executed two search warrants at a Darling Street and an Autumn Road location in relation to the investigation. Replica firearms were located.

Additionally, information received indicated the accused were in violation of multiple parole and probation orders.

As a result of the investigation, the following individuals have been arrested and stand charged with Criminal Code offences as follows:

David STEWART, 35, of Brantford, was arrested and stands charged with:
  • Assault
  • Forcible Confinement
  • Break, Enter a Dwelling House with Intent to Commit Indictable Offence
  • Failure to Comply with Judicial Release Order 

Claude SIMON, 41, of Brantford, stands charged with:
  • Point Firearm
  • Forcible Confinement
  • Intimidation – Use Violence
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Firearm or Weapon: Possession Contrary to Prohibition Order
  • Failure to Comply with Judicial Release Order
  • Breach of Probation

Both accused have been held for bail.

BPS arrest three for assault

After continued investigation, detectives with the Brantford Police Service have arrested three individuals believed responsible for an assault that sent a 35-year-old man to hospital.

On Thursday, February 2, 20233 at approximately 7:30 a.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service responded to a report of assault at an Emilie Street residence.

Officers attended and located a 35-year-old man who was transported to hospital where he received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. 

As a result of the investigation, the following individuals stand charged with Criminal Code offences as follows:

Anthony SEARS, 35, of Brantford, stands charged with:
  • Assault Causing Bodily Harm
  • Assault with a Weapon
Paul MARTIN, 43, of Brantford, stands charged with: 
  • Assault Causing Bodily Harm, and
Trishia LADD, 41 of Brantford, stands charged with: 
  • Assault
  • Breach of Probation

BPS arrest 53-year-old Brantford man for inciting hatred

As a result of an investigation launched February 2023 by the Brantford Police Service, a 53-year-old Brantford man is facing a number of charges related to uttering threats and inciting hatred.

Officers became aware of information posted publicly via the internet by the accused which was threatening and targeting specific communities. Messaging posted by the accused was determined to be antisemitic in nature and encouraging others to commit acts of violence.    

On Monday, February 13, 2023, police executed a search warrant at a Mohawk Street residence where a large quantity of ammunition was located, stored improperly, in a careless and dangerous manner.

As a result of the investigation, a 53-year-old man from Brantford stands charged with the following Criminal Code violations:
  • Public Incitement of Hatred
  • Careless Storage of Firearm (or ammunition)
  • Uttering Threats to Cause Death and Bodily Harm x 3

The accused has been held for a bail hearing with bail opposed.

BPS respond to weapon related disturbance

The Brantford Police Service are actively investigating a reported disturbance, allegedly involving a firearm. 

On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at approximately 11:45 a.m., a 9-1-1 call was received to report a disturbance inside a Grand River Avenue residence. A man within the residence was reported to have a firearm.

Officers attended and are currently on scene to investigate. 

No physical injuries have been reported as a result of the incident. 

As this investigation is active and ongoing, additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

BPS arrest four in assault / robbery investigation

Four people are in police custody after a man was allegedly assaulted and robbed early this morning.

On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at approximately 5:30 a.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service responded to a residence located on Tenth Avenue near Division Street after receiving a report of a robbery and assault.

A 19-year-old male victim was transported to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers attended the scene, and after investigation, four individuals from Brantford are now in custody and stand charged with the following Criminal Code violations: 

A 23-year-old man stands charged with:
  • Assault Cause Bodily Harm
  • Failure to Comply with Undertaking

A 22-year-old man stands charged with:
  • Assault Cause Bodily Harm

A 28-year-old female stands charged with:
  • Assault Cause Bodily Harm, and 

A 22-year-old female stands charged with:
  • Obstruct Peace Officer

As the information for the accused has not yet been sworn to in court, the names of the accused cannot be released.

The Brantford Police Service would like to advise the public that there is no threat to public safety as a result of this incident. The involved parties were known to each other. This was not a random incident.

This investigation is active and ongoing.

BPS investigate early morning shooting

The Brantford Police Service are actively investigating a report of shooting that occurred earlier this morning outside a Nelson Street residence.
 
On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at approximately 9:00 a.m., a 9-1-1 call was received to report a male victim, at a Nelson Street residence (near Brock Street), suffering from a gunshot.
 
The male victim was transported to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
 
Officers attended and are currently on scene to investigate.
 
This is not believed to be a random incident.
 
Police are asking residents in the immediate area to check any video surveillance between 8:30 am and 9:10 am and contact police with any information.
 
As this investigation is active and ongoing, additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
