Historical Plaque Stolen From Front of Museum

The Brantford Police Service is currently investigating the theft of a Historical Plaque from the front of a local Museum. 

On Thursday February 14, 2019 the Brantford Police Service was notified by the Brant County Museum that a Historical Plaque had been stolen.  Sometime overnight unknown person(s) removed the sign from its pole on the front lawn. The Historical Plaque was in reference to Hon. Arthur Sturgis Hardy who was Ontario’s fourth Prime Minister who was born in Mount Pleasant.

Crime Brief - February 13, 2019

Type:  Impaired – Alcohol  
Incident: 19-05436
Location: Colborne Street West       
Incident: On Tuesday February 12, 2019 just after 12:00 p.m. Brantford Police Service received a call about an impaired driver in the area of Colborne Street West.  Community Patrol Officers attended the area and located the vehicle.  Officers stopped the vehicle and spoke to the male driver.  Upon speaking to the driver officers observed signs of impairment.  A demand was given for a roadside screening device.  The driver provided a sample which registered a fail.  The diver was arrested and transported to the Brantford Police Service where he was to provide samples of his breath as required by law.  The diver’s samples were over the legal limit.  A 37 year old Brantford male is charged with 80 Plus under the Criminal Code.  The drivers licence was suspended for 90 days and her vehicle was impounded for 7 days.

Incident: On Tuesday February 12, 2019 just after 11:00 p.m. Community Patrol Officers observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed without its lights on driving on Lynden Road.  Officers stopped the vehicle and spoke to the male driver.  Information was received that the drivers licence was currently under suspension.  A 22 year old Brantford male has been charged with Suspend Drive under the Highway Traffic Act.  His vehicle was impounded for 7 days.

Incident: On Tuesday February 12, 2019 Brantford Police Service received a report of a tractor trailer that had been entered.  Sometime overnight unknown person(s) broke the lock and seal to a trailer parked on Sinclair Blvd.  At the time of the report it was unknown what was taken.

Location: West Street       
Incident: On Monday February 11, 2019 just after 12:00 a.m. Community Patrol Officers observed a vehicle travelling on West Street.  Information was received that the vehicles licence plate validation had expired in 2018.  Officers stopped the vehicle and spoke to the female driver.  Upon speaking to the driver, Officers observed signs of impairment.  A demand was given for a roadside screening device.  The driver provided a sample which registered a fail.  The diver was arrested and transported to the Brantford Police Service where she was to provide samples of her breath as required by law.  The diver’s samples were over two times the legal limit.  A 27 year old Brantford woman is charged with 80 Plus under the Criminal Code.  The drivers licence was suspended for 90 days and her vehicle was impounded for 7 days.

Location: Darling Street     
Incident: On Saturday February 9, 2019 just before 2:30 p.m. Brantford Police Service received a 9-1-1 call about a disturbance at a residence on Darling Street.  A male relative had attended to the residence and started to cause a disturbance.  During the disturbance the male damaged walls inside the residence.  When the male left he continued to cause a disturbance by yelling and screaming disrupting the neighbourhood.  A 26 year old Brantford male is charged with Mischief to Property Under $5000 and Cause a Disturbance under the Criminal Code.

Location: Stanley Street      
Incident: On Friday February 8, 2019 just before 11:00 p.m. Brantford Police Service received a 9-1-1 call about a stolen vehicle in the area of Nelson Street.  The vehicle was seen driving in the area and was believed to have been previously reported stolen to police.  Community Patrol Officers attended to the area where they located the vehicle on Stanley Street.  Officers stopped the vehicle and spoke to the male driver and female passenger.  Upon speaking to the driver he was able to produce valid registration and insurance for a vehicle with the attached licence plate and vehicle identification number.  Investigation revealed that the vehicle identification number had been tampered with and replaced with that of a similar vehicle.  The male and female were both arrested without incident.  A 35 year old Brantford male has been charged with Possession of Stolen Motor Vehicle Over $5000 under the Criminal Code.  A 46 year old Brantford woman is charged with Occupy Stolen Motor Vehicle under the Criminal Code.

Location: Dalhousie Street      
Incident: On Thursday February 7, 2019 just before 9:30 a.m. Community Patrol Officers observed a vehicle travelling on Dalhousie Street near George Street. Information was received that the registered owner of the vehicle was prohibited from driving as his driver’s licence was suspended.  Officers performed a traffic stop on the vehicle and spoke to the male driver.  Investigation revealed that the driver was not the registered owner, however the information provided by the driver was proved to be false.  Investigation revealed that the driver was wanted on three outstanding warrants for his arrest and was currently bound by a court order with conditions.  The driver was arrested without incident.  A female related to the investigation was at the scene and was dealt to by police.    Investigation revealed $1400 worth of suspected Cocaine and $300 worth of suspected Hashish was located.  Both parties were arrested without incident.  A 34 year old Brantford male was arrested on the outstanding warrants and has been charged with Fail to Comply with Recognizance Order under the Criminal Code.  He is also charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Cocaine) and Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Hashish) under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.  A 30 year old Brantford woman is charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Cocaine) under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Location: Dalhousie Street      
Incident: On Thursday February 7, 2019 just after 7:30 p.m. Brantford Police Service received a 9-1-1 call about a disturbance on Dalhousie Street near King Street.  An unknown male was seen in the area yelling and screaming, at one point the male pulled out a knife and was waving it around.  Community Patrol Officers attended to the area where they located the male.  Officers spoke to the male and were successfully able to arrest the male without incident. A 36 year old Brantford male is charged with Cause a Disturbance and Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose.

Location: Mount Pleasant Road      
Incident: On Wednesday February 6, 2019 just before 4:00 p.m. Brantford Police Service received a number of 9-1-1 calls about a vehicle that was trying to run over a male on the sidewalk.  The vehicle was seen travelling on Mount Pleasant Road when it went up on the curb and tried to run over a male.  The vehicle was seen doing doughnuts on the roadway and boulevard and going up and down the street numerous times.  Community Patrol Officers attended to the area where they located and stopped the vehicle.  Officers were also able to locate the male involved.  Investigation revealed that the female driver and male passenger had gotten into a verbal argument.  The male had gotten out of the vehicle and was walking down the street.  The female left but returned to the area where she left the roadway and drove at the male.  The male was able to get out of the way.  During the incident the driver hit a decorative ornament on the front lawn of a residence but left the area.  Further investigation revealed that the female drier was a disqualified driver as her driver’s licence was currently suspended.  The victim received non-life threatening injuries as a result of the incident.  A 24 year old Brantford woman has been charged with Dangerous Driving, Drive Disqualified and Failure to Stop After Accident under the Criminal Code.

Brantford Police Investigating Illegally Dumped Material

Over the weekend the Brantford Police Service was contacted regarding illegally dumped
material that was found at two separate locations in the City.  These location were in the
area of Spalding Ave and Golf Road.  A third location was discovered this morning in the
area of Edge Street.  In all three locations containers containing unknown
substances/industrial chemicals were found to be illegally dumped.

The Brantford Police Service is working in conjunction with the Brantford Fire
Department and the City of Brantford to safely investigate and clean up that material. 

The Brantford Police Service believes that the materials that were discarded may have
belonged to and are by-products from an illegal controlled drug lab. 

The Brantford Police Service would like to warn the public about this investigation.  If
any member of the public comes across any materials that have been discarded, please do
not approach them, contact the Police, Fire Department or the City to report its location.

Robbery With A Weapon

Shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 2nd, 2019 Brantford Police responded to a robbery at a Fairview Drive business. 

Members of the patrol section were called to the business after a lone male entered the store carrying a weapon.  As the suspect approached the counter, the two employees on site yelled for help, at which time the suspect fled from the store without obtaining anything.  No one was injured in the incident.

The Brantford Police K-9 unit was called in to assist by conducting a track in the area, and the Major Crime unit has taken over the investigation. 

The suspect is described as a white male with a slim build, wearing a white or grey hoodie and dark coloured sweatpants.  The males face was covered by a black face mask.

Location: Henry Street/ Wayne Gretzky Parkway       
Incident: On Tuesday January 29, 2019 just after 10:00 p.m. Brantford Police Service received a report about a single motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Henry Street and Wayne Gretzky Parkway.  A vehicle had been travelling south when it left the roadway and struck a telephone pole.  Community Patrol Officers attended to the area where they located the vehicle and driver.  Upon speaking to the driver Officers observed signs of impairment.  The driver was issued a roadside screening device demand.  The driver provided a sample into a roadside screening device and registered a fail.  The driver was arrested and transported to the Brantford Police Service where he was to provide samples of his breath as required by law.  The accused samples were over the legal limit.  A 20 year old Brantford male has been charged with 80 Plus under the Criminal Code of Canada.  The accused licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for 7 days.

Incident:  On Tuesday January 29, 2019 just after 3:00 p.m. Brantford Police Service received a 9-1-1 call about a Break and Enter from a residence on Brighton Ave.  A relative of the owner had attended the residence and was not welcome.  The male refused to leave and broke a front window to the residence in order to gain access to the locked door.  When the male entered, the resident contacted police.  Community patrol Officers attended to the residence where they located the male inside.  A 38 year old Brantford male has been charged with Mischief to Property Under $5000.

Incident: On Monday January 28, 2019 just after 6:30 p.m. Brantford Police Service received a call about a theft at a business on Stanley Street.  The victim had been inside the business when she noticed that her wallet was missing from her table.  The victim observed a female who had been sitting beside her with her wallet in her hand.  The female gave the wallet back and fled the business.  When the victim looked inside her wallet she was missing money.  Community Patrol Officers attended to the area where they located and arrested the accused a short distance away.  A 20 year old Brantford woman has been charged with  Theft Under $5000.

Incident: 19-03278
Location: High Street       
Incident: On January 26, 2019 just before 2:00 p.m. Community Patrol Officers were in the area of High Street conducting an investigation.  While in the area Officers located a female who was currently wanted for several Criminal Code offences related to another incident.  The female was found to be in the company of an individual that she was not to have contact with as per an outstanding court order. The female was arrested without incident.  While dealing with the accused she was found to be in possession of 10 unidentified pills and a small amount of suspected Fentanyl.  She was also found to be in possession of a stolen drivers licence.  A 25 year old Brantford female has been charged with Possession of Stolen Property Under $5000 and Breach of Probation x2 under the Criminal Code.  She is further charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.  The accused was held for a bail hearing.

Location: Market Street     
Incident: On Sunday January 27, 2019 just before 3:00 p.m. Brantford Police Service received a 9-1-1 call from a business on Market Street regarding a shoplifter.  An unknown female was seen by employees gathering items and then attending the washroom.  When the female left the washroom employees could no longer see the items.  The female left the store and was confronted by staff.  The female had concealed several items on her person and in a shopping bag and had not made any attempts to pay for the hem.  Community Patrol Officers attended to the business where they located and arrested the accused without incident.  Investigation revealed that the accused was currently wanted on an outstanding warrant for her arrest.  A 34 year old Brantford woman was arrested on the outstanding warrant and has been charged with Theft Under $5000 and Possession of Stolen Property Under $5000.

Location: Market Street      
Incident: On Friday January 25, 2019 just after 9:00 p.m. Brantford Police Service received a 9-1-1 call about a robbery from a store on Market Street.  An unknown male had entered the store, brandished a knife and demanded money.  When the employee refused the suspected fled.  Community Patrol Officers attended to the area in an attempt to locate the suspect.  Officers were able to view video surveillance and were able to positively identify the suspect.  While searching the area Officers located the accused in a vehicle.  The vehicle was being driven by the accused wife.  As a result of the investigation a 52 year old male and a 47 year old female have been charged with Robbery.

Location: Victoria Street      
Incident: On Saturday January 26, 2019 just after 1:00 a.m. Brantford Police Service received a 9-1-1 call about an assault at a residence on Victoria Street.  Two of the residents in the house had gotten into a verbal argument which turned physical.  The one residence had taken a broken table leg and had assaulted the other resident with it.  After the altercation the suspect then damaged a door in the residence by punching and kicking holes in it.  Community Patrol Officers attended to the residence where they located the parties involved.  The accused was arrested without incident.  The victim received non-life threatening injuries as a result of the altercation.  A 25 year old Brantford male has been charged with Assault with a Weapon, Mischief to Property Under $5000 and Breach of Probation under the Criminal Code.

Location: Park Ave      
Incident: On Friday January 25, 2019 just after 4:30 p.m. Brantford Police Service received a call about a theft from a residence on Park Ave.  An unknown male and female had been seen in the area and took a package from the front porch that had been delivered to an address on Park Ave.  Community Patrol Officers attended to the area where they located and arrested the male and female without incident.  A 41 year old female from Brantford is charged with Theft Under $500 and Possession of Stolen Property Under $5000.  A 48 year old Brantford male is charged with Theft Under $5000.

Location: Colborne Street      
Incident: On Friday January 25, 2019 just after 2:00 a.m. Community Patrol Officers observed a vehicle travelling on Colborne Street.  Information was received that the licence plate attached to the vehicle had been reported missing.  Officers performed a traffic stop and spoke to the male driver.  Investigation revealed that the driver was currently a novice driver and was not abiding by conditions of a G1 drivers licence, that the driver’s licence was currently suspended and that he was currently bound by a court order with conditions that he was currently contravening.  Further investigation revealed a large amount of suspected cocaine (street value $2500) located inside the vehicle.  It was also discovered that the vehicle had mechanical defects and that the validation sticker attached to the licence plate had been altered.  As a result of the investigation a 19 year old Brampton male has been charged with Breach of Recognizance Order under the Criminal Code.  He is also charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance under the Controlled Drug and Substances Act.  The accused has also been charged with Drive While Under Suspension x2 and several other Highway Traffic Act offences along with Operate Motor Vehicle – No Insurance under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.

UPDATE - Shooting Investigation

On January 23, 2019 at approximately 5:30 PM Brantford Police Service were called to a residence on Woodlawn Ave. in relation to a shooting. A male in his 20’s had sustained injuries. 

The male was transported to hospital where he was treated.  He is in stable condition.

Brantford Police believe that this is not a random act and the victim and suspects are known to each other.  A description of the suspects is as follows:

SUSPECT #1: Lighter skinned black male, approximately 6'1" unshaven, with short black hair.  He was wearing black jeans and a grey short jacket

SUSPECT #2:  White male wearing a blue jacket with a hood. No further information is available.

The investigation is continuing.

Shooting Investigation

On January 23, 2019 at approximately 5:30 PM Brantford Police Service were called to a residence on Woodlawn Ave. in relation to a shooting. A male in his 20’s had sustained injuries. 

The male has been transported to hospital where he is currently being treated.  His condition is not known.

Brantford Police Service are of the opinion that the victim and unknown suspect or suspects are known to each other, and that this was not a random incident. Brantford Police Service continue to investigate.

Citizens’ Police Academy Accepting Applications

The Brantford Police Service is inviting members of the public to submit applications for our 2019 Citizens Police Academy. The Academy will run each Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. commencing March 27, 2019 to May 15, 2019.

The first known Citizens’ Police Academy was formed in the United Kingdom in 1977. Our Service’s first Academy began in March 1999 and ran for eight weeks. The Brantford Police Service Citizens’ Police Academy has been structured as a series of interactive, information-sharing evenings, similar to a night school class. Whatever a citizen’s motivation for attending, the end result will be a community member who better understands the challenges and responsibilities that the men and women of the Brantford Police Service face every day.  There will also be an opportunity for participants to provide feedback and suggestions to improve the Service.

We are looking for mature, community-minded adults who represent a wide range of ages, occupations and reasons for participating. Security checks will be completed before selection of the participants and valid photo identification is also required which should be attached to the application.

The following topics will be covered during our 21st Citizen’s Police Academy.
• Overview of the Brantford Police Service
• Tour of the facility
• Canine Unit
• Forensic Identification
• Criminal Investigation – Major Crime
• Use of force
• Internet crime and safety
• Motor vehicle collision investigation/reconstruction and radar
• Emergency Response Team
• Street Crime Unit
• Impaired driving program demonstration
On the final evening there will be a graduation ceremony and a draw for three graduates to participate in a ‘ride-along’ with one of our community patrol officers.
