SAFETY OUTDOORS

Use the buddy system when walking somewhere.

Always let someone know where you are going, the time of departure and approximately when you plan on arriving.

Plan your route and avoid taking any short cuts along the way.

Stay away from poorly lit areas.

Appear confident when you are out walking or jogging.

Always be aware of your surroundings.

Avoid overburdening yourself with packages.

Don't wrap purses around the wrist or neck.

Do not carry large sums of money. Instead carry credit and debit cards.

If you are walking at night be sure to know where Block Parents and places of safety are.

If you suspect you are being followed, cross the street and go to the nearest well-lit residence or business. While you are walking there, call out to give the impression that someone is waiting for you and when you arrive to a well-lit residence call the police immediately.

IN YOUR HOME

If you notice anything or anyone suspicious call the police immediately.

When there is a knock at the door remember that you do not have to open the door for anyone. It is not rude to speak through a closed door or ask for identification. It is better to be safe rather then sorry.

Never leave a spare key hidden for a burglar to find. Leave the key with a trusted neighbour.

Install good quality dead bolts on your door and a wide angle "peep hole".

Never inform to a person at the door or on the telephone that you are home alone.

Never leave notes advising to someone that you are not home.

SAFETY AT WORK

Avoid isolated or deserted hallways, stairways and areas.

Call security or the police if you see someone in the building that you do not recognize.

If you have to stay late try and arrange for a co-worker to stay with you.

When working after hours be sure to keep all the doors and windows locked at all times.

If your company has security advise them that you are staying late and ask for periodic checks.

Inform security when leaving for home and request an escort to your car.

Park near the doorways.

USING ELEVATORS

Use the elevator with known co-workers.

While you are waiting for the elevator stand to the side so you have an opportunity to view the occupants inside the elevator before you enter it.

If you are on the elevator and someone gets on and makes you feel uncomfortable get off at the next floor.

If someone confronts you on the elevator push all of the floor buttons. Pushing the stop button may get stuck between floors.
