32-year-old man arrested and charged with assault and numerous firearms offences

A 32-year-old Brantford man has been charged with numerous firearms related offences after police responded to a report of an assault in progress. 

On Saturday, June 4, 2022, at approximately 6:00 a.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service attended the area the of Charing Cross and West Street after receiving a call from a concerned citizen to report an assault.

Police were advised by the citizen that a male was observed to have punched a female multiple times before leaving the area on foot.

The male and female were located by police nearby. As officers approached, the male was observed to strike the female. 
 
As officers exited their vehicle to intervene and arrest the male, he fled on foot, travelling southbound on Harris Ave. While attempting to flee from police, the accused was observed by officers to throw a bag over a fence. 

Officers arrested the male and retrieved the bag. Search of the bag incident to arrest located a loaded 9mm firearm. 

Information received indicated that the accused is currently bound by, and in violation of, two firearm prohibitions from neighbouring police services.

The accused was also determined to in violation of a release order which stipulates that the accused is not to have any weapons as per the Criminal Code of Canada. 

As a result, Andrew Steven KREKO, 32, of Brantford, stands charged with the following Criminal Code offences: 
  • Assault
  • Possession contrary to order x2 
  • Fail to comply with release order 
  • Carry in unsafe manner
  • Carrying concealed 
  • Unauthorized possession 
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession 
  • Prohibited weapon with ammunition 

The accused was held for bail.
