BPS Downtown BEAT Unit Seize Illegal Cannabis and THC Infused Edibles

On Thursday, August 27, 2020 members of the Brantford Police Service Downtown Better Enforcement Action Team (BEAT Unit) attended a business in the downtown core after receiving complaints regarding the sale of illicit cannabis.

Upon arriving at the location, large quantities of illicit cannabis along with price lists were clearly visible. As the location was being secured, members of the BPS BEAT Unit also observed a quantity of a substance believed to be cocaine.

As a result of the investigation, police obtained a search warrant for the location. Execution of the search warrant led to the search and seizure of the following:

  • Approx. 7,494 grams of cannabis
  • Approx. 244 grams of hash
  • Approx. 1 gram of suspected cocaine
  • THC infused chocolate cannabis edibles
  • Approx. 150 of 1 gram individual packages of "shatter”
  • Approx. 51 packages of 500 mg THC infused gummy candies
  • Approx. 96 individually packaged THC infused gummy cannabis candy
  • Approx. 27 THC infused cheesecakes
  • Approx. 23 THC infused brownies
  • Approx. 16 bags of THC infused cotton candy
  • A candy floss machine used to create THC infused cotton candy
  • Approx. 182 cannabis cigarettes
  • Approx. 26 grams of "shatter”
  • Approx. 50 "moon rock” THC infused edibles
  • Approx. 35 grams of "Bits and Bites” THC infused edibles
  • Approx. 4 loaves of THC infused banana bread

In addition to the substances listed above, a quantity of Canadian currency and records relating to the electronic purchases made of the illicit cannabis products was also seized.

The involved business was not licensed to sell cannabis/cannabis related products. Items sold from this location were not provided by licensed distributors. 

Brantford Police Service would like to remind members of the public that the only legal manner to purchase cannabis and cannabis related products is thru a licensed distributor. Purchasing these products from other than authorized and licensed distributors is dangerous as the cannabis products may be mixed with other substances.

Many of the items seized are dangerous as they resemble candy and appeal to children. To prevent accidental consumption by children, ensure only legal products are purchased from a licensed provider. Products are required to be clearly labelled, must contain a regulated amount of THC and come in plain, child-resistant packaging.

As a result of the investigation, a 39 year old male from Brantford and a 22 year old female from Brantford have been charged with:

  • Possession for the purpose of distributing, under the Cannabis Act
  • Possession for the purpose of selling under the Cannabis Act, and 
  • Possession of a controlled substance (cocaine) under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
