CaNEW Friends on the Grand

Jul 28, 2017

On Tuesday, August 15, 2017 the Brant Youth Wellness Coalition (BYWC) will be hosting our 2nd Annual CaNEW Friends on the Grand? canoe trip.

This event is organized in an effort to enrich the lives of local youth and pairs a youth from our surrounding community with a justice or social service provider from Brant, Brantford, Six Nations or New Credit to canoe together from Paris to Brantford.
For many youth, it is their first time experiencing the beauty of the Grand River. This event allows each participant to look at others through a different lens and drop imposed labels. The event develops cultural awareness, understanding and mutual respect within a fun and cooperative time canoeing.

Last year?s event saw over 100 participants including those from Justice and Youth Service workers, Brantford Police Service, Six Nations Police and youth from Brantford and surrounding communities.
We are seeking youth ages 12-18 years of age (grades 6-12) to attend. The event is absolutely FREE to all youth. The fun filled day consists of a canoe experience along the Grand River, snacks, BBQ lunch at the end of the day at Brant Park and swag gifts. All participants will enjoy music and entertainment at the end of the day at Brant Park. The day also includes priceless memories, laughter and lifelong friendships.

To ensure that the all youth have the opportunity to attend bus transportation will be provided at a variety of locations including; North Park Collegiate at 8:00 a.m., Ohsweken Plaza at 8:00 a.m., Bus Terminal at 64 Darling Street downtown Brantford at 8:15 a.m. and Sobey?s Plaza West Brant at 8:30 a.m.

As a member of the BYWC I am very excited and proud of the work done by the Brant Youth Wellness Coalition to arrange the second annual CaNEW Friends event.  It is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the history and scenery of the Grand River while helping bridge the gap and forging bonds with the youth of our community.-Sergeant Jordy Schmutz of the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Unit
