Citizens’ Police Academy Accepting Applications

Jan 22, 2019

The Brantford Police Service is inviting members of the public to submit applications for our 2019 Citizens Police Academy. The Academy will run each Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. commencing March 27, 2019 to May 15, 2019.

The first known Citizens’ Police Academy was formed in the United Kingdom in 1977. Our Service’s first Academy began in March 1999 and ran for eight weeks. The Brantford Police Service Citizens’ Police Academy has been structured as a series of interactive, information-sharing evenings, similar to a night school class. Whatever a citizen’s motivation for attending, the end result will be a community member who better understands the challenges and responsibilities that the men and women of the Brantford Police Service face every day.  There will also be an opportunity for participants to provide feedback and suggestions to improve the Service.

We are looking for mature, community-minded adults who represent a wide range of ages, occupations and reasons for participating. Security checks will be completed before selection of the participants and valid photo identification is also required which should be attached to the application.

The following topics will be covered during our 21st Citizen’s Police Academy.
• Overview of the Brantford Police Service
• Tour of the facility
• Canine Unit
• Forensic Identification
• Criminal Investigation – Major Crime
• Use of force
• Internet crime and safety
• Motor vehicle collision investigation/reconstruction and radar
• Emergency Response Team
• Street Crime Unit
• Impaired driving program demonstration
On the final evening there will be a graduation ceremony and a draw for three graduates to participate in a ‘ride-along’ with one of our community patrol officers.

Applications are available at the front desk of the police station, or through our website at
