CRIME BRIEF: January 13, 2022

Incident:           22-1487
Location:          Salisbury Avenue

On Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a concerned citizen called 9-1-1 to advise of a possible impaired driver in the area of Salisbury Avenue.
 
The caller reported that the driver was observed behind the wheel of a vehicle while appearing to be falling asleep, driving slowly, and swerving erratically. 
 
Brantford police attended the area and located the motor vehicle at the intersection of Salisbury Avenue and Ontario Street. A lone female was observed behind the wheel.
 
A traffic stop occurred, and in speaking with the driver, officers observed signs of impairment. 
 
The accused was arrested for operation while impaired and transported to provide samples of her breath as required by law. Both samples were over three times the legal limit.
 
As a result of the investigation, a 45-year-old female from Kitchener stands charged with the following Criminal Code violations: 
  • Operation while Impaired - plus 80
 
Additionally, a license suspension was issued, and the vehicle impounded as per law.
 


Type:                  Assault 
Incident:           22-1143
Location:          Sheridan Street

On Monday, January 10, 2022, at approximately 8:30 a.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service were dispatched to attend a Sheridan Street residence in regard to an assault.

Officers attended and investigation revealed that the accused, a 31-year-old man, had physically assaulted a 65-year-old male victim.
 
The victim was transported to hospital where he received medical treatment for minor physical injuries.
 
As a result, a 31-year-old man from Brantford (No Fixed Address), stands charged with assault causing bodily harm, a Criminal Code violation. 
 


Type:                  Impaired (Drug)
Incident:           22-1063
Location:          King George Road

On Sunday January 9, 2022, at approximately 11:20 a.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service were dispatched to the area of King George Road and Oxford Street. Information was received to advise of a possible impaired driver. 
 
Officers attended the area and located the motor vehicle. A lone man was occupying the driver’s seat.
 
A traffic stop occurred and in speaking with the accused, officers observed signs of impairment. 
 
At approximately 11:30 p.m., the accused was arrested for Operation while Impaired by Drug. 
 
The accused was submitted to a Drug Recognition Expert Examination, as required by law. The accused was found to be impaired.
 
As a result, a 32-year-old man from Brantford, stands charged with Operation while Impaired (drug) contrary to the Criminal Code. 
 
Additionally, a license suspension was issued, and the vehicle impounded as per law.
 


Type:                  Break and Enter
Incident:           22-901
Location:          Sheridan Street

On Saturday, January 8, 2022, at approximately 2:30 a.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service were dispatched to attend a Sheridan Street residence in regard to a report of a break and enter. 
 
Officers attended the location and received information to indicate a man entered the residence thru the front door. The accused was confronted by two residents, who asked him to leave. The accused refused to leave, broke a lamp, and physically hit and verbally threatened one of the residents. 
 
The victims and the accused were known to each other.
 
The accused, Shawn Joseph BERGMAN, 36, of Brantford, was subsequently arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code violations: 
  • Assault 
  • Break and Enter and Commit 
  • Mischief Under $5,000 
  • Uttering threats to cause death
 
The accused was held for bail. 
 


Type:                  Stolen Vehicle
Incident:           22-866
Location:          Colborne Street

On Friday, January 7, 2022, at approximately 8:30 p.m., patrol officers with the Brantford Police Service observed a suspicious vehicle within the parking lot of a motel located on Colborne Street. 
 
Investigation revealed that the licence plate attached to the vehicle was not registered to this vehicle. The vehicle had previously been reported to police as stolen. 
 
The driver of the vehicle was identified, and information was received to indicate that the accused was in violation of a valid release order and driving prohibition.
 
When speaking with the accused, a false identity was provided to officers.
 
As a result of this investigation, Jeffery Darryl SHARPE, 35, of Brantford (No Fixed Address), stands charged with the following:
  • Possession of Stolen Goods over $5,000 contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Failure to comply with Judicial Release contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Obstruct a Peace Officer contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Failure to Comply with Undertaking contrary to the Criminal Code 
  • Drive Motor Vehicle while Under Suspension contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
  • Use Plate Not Authorized for Motor Vehicle contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
 
The accused was held for a bail hearing.

Incident:           22-809
Location:          Bosworth Court and Wayne Gretzky Parkway

On Friday, January 7, 2022, at approximately 12:45 p.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service conducted a traffic stop in the area of Bosworth Court and Wayne Gretzky Parkway after receiving information to advise of a possible impaired driver.
 
Officers located the vehicle, which was being operated by a lone female. When speaking with the accused, signs of intoxication were observed.
 
The accused was then placed under arrest for impaired operation and was transported in order to provided samples of her breath as required by law. Both samples provided were over the legal limit.
 
As a result of this investigation, a 47-year-old woman from St. Catharines, stands charged with Impaired Operation - Plus 80, contrary to the Criminal Code.
 
Additionally, a licence suspension was issued, and the vehicle impounded as per law.

Incident:           22-502
Location:          Colborne Street

On Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at approximately 1:15 a.m., patrol officers with the Brantford Police Service observed a possible impaired driver travelling eastbound on Colborne Street near Brant Avenue and conducted a traffic stop.
 
In speaking with the male driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, officers observed signs of impairment. 
 
The accused was transported to provide samples of breath as required by law. Both samples provided were over the legal limit.
 
As a result, the accused, a 28-year-old man from Brantford, stands charged with Over 80, contrary to the Criminal Code.

Additionally, a license suspension was issued, and the vehicle impounded as per law.
