ORIGINAL RELEASE: September 2, 2021

With the first day of school quickly approaching, the Brantford Police Service Traffic Unit will launch a Back to School Road Safety Blitz, looking for aggressive drivers, persons speeding, and to conduct stop sign enforcement.

As kids return to school, we ask everyone to be extra careful on our city streets, as children may not pay attention to the rules of the roads or watch for moving cars. We would like to remind motorists and pedestrians the importance of working together to ensure our roads remain a safe place.

At this time, we would also like to remind drivers the penalties for Stunt Driving under the Highway Traffic Act have recently changed. If you are travelling 40km/hr over the posted speed limit in speed zones below 80 km/hr, you will now be charged with Stunt Driving.

In addition to fees and demerit points, a driver charged with Stunt Driving will now receive a 7-day driver licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment. In the coming months, the licence suspension for those caught Stunt
Driving will increase to 30-days in addition to the 14-day vehicle impoundment.

Motorists are also reminded to use caution around school buses. When a school bus has stopped and activated its flashing red lights, all vehicles travelling behind or approaching the bus must come to a complete stop before reaching the bus. Drivers who fail to stop in these conditions face a minimum $400 fine and six demerit points for a first offence.

Parents are encouraged to review and practice safety rules with their children to ensure they are familiar with their route to the bus or school.

We urge motorists and pedestrians to commute safely, free from distractions and to use extra caution when travelling through residential areas, school zones and along bus routes. Please slow down and be alert for children travelling to and from school. Community safety is a shared responsibility.

Road Safety Initiatives October 2021: Off-Road Vehicles Prohibited on City Roads & Trails

Sep 28, 2021

The Brantford Police Service is reminding all off-road vehicle users to obey applicable laws and safety precautions when operating any off-road vehicle and that off-road vehicle use on roads in the City of Brantford is prohibited.

In accordance with the Off-Road Vehicle Act, municipalities must have a by-law permitting certain All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) use on roadways.

Currently, the City of Brantford does not have a by-law permitting on-road ATV/ORV use and as such, on-road driving of ATVs/ORVs in the City of Brantford is prohibited.

Additionally, motorized recreational vehicles of any kind - meaning dirt bikes, snowmobiles, go-carts, ATVS, or any vehicle propelled or driven by an internal combustion engine - are prohibited from travelling in any public park or City-maintained trail.

Utilizing these types of motorized vehicles on pedestrian trails creates significant safety risks to everyone who is utilizing the trail system.

BPS have responded to several complaints regarding trespassing, mischief and off-road vehicle use on the roadways and trails throughout the City of Brantford. Off-road vehicle riders have been reported to be on private property without permission and in some cases have caused damage to property and fields.

Being on private property, without permission from the property owner, is a violation under the Trespass to Property Act and could subject riders to charges. Causing damage by riding on property could subject riders to mischief charges.

Being a responsible rider by following laws and wearing approved helmets will significantly reduce the risk of injuries as well as being charged with offences.

Road Safety Initiatives October 2021: Excessive Noise and Modified Vehicles

Sep 27, 2021

The Brantford Police Service makes educating the public in safe driving practices a road safety priority. An essential part of our job is to save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways. Our ongoing enforcement initiatives focus on impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving and speeding. These behaviours endanger drivers, passengers, all road users and pedestrians at risk of serious or fatal injury collisions.

During the month of October 2021, the BPS Traffic Unit has heard the community’s concerns regarding the noise pollution of excessively loud vehicles on roadways in residential areas. We will be conducting enforcement and public education in regards to vehicles making unreasonable and unnecessary noise as well as an increased focus on improperly modified vehicles.

Increased public education will be in effect in an effort to promote safe driving behaviours and ensure motorists are aware of the rules of the road.

The Highway Traffic Act of Ontario indicates that a person having control of a vehicle shall not "make unreasonable noise, and a driver of any motor vehicle shall not permit any unreasonable amount of smoke to escape from their motor vehicle, nor shall such driver at any time cause the motor vehicle to make any unnecessary noise.”

A focus of this ongoing project is to reduce the number of motor vehicles with modified and/or excessively loud exhaust systems on the roads. Vehicles will be subject to charges, including Improper Muffler and Unnecessary Noise, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).The penalties under the HTA include fines of $110 upon conviction.

Vehicles found to be unlawfully modified will be reported to the Insurance Bureau of Canada with the potential of a policy suspension.

We encourage vehicle owners to repair modified exhaust systems and avoid using devices such as factory-issued mechanisms to alter and increase their vehicles' sound in quiet, residential areas.

Anyone with information concerning aggressive driving or illegal street racing activities can contact the Brantford Police Service by calling 519-756-0113. Information or driving complaints can also be reported by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

The local roadways are to be shared and enjoyed by everyone, please keep this in mind when operating a motor vehicle. The Brantford Police Service is committed to increase public compliance with safe driving in order to prevent collisions, save lives, and reduce injuries on our roads.
