Brantford Police Issue Public Warning Regarding Phone Scam
The Brantford Police Service is issuing a public warning following a recent increase in reports of suspicious phone calls that appear to be part of a fraudulent scheme.
On this date, the Brantford Police Service has received more than 100 calls from concerned citizens who reported receiving multiple missed calls, which appeared to originate from the Brantford Police Service’s non-emergency number. In some cases, call display information falsely showed the name “Brantford Police Service.”
Some individuals who answered these calls reported speaking with someone who identified themselves as a detective with the Brantford Police Service. The caller falsely claimed that the individual was a suspect in a fraud investigation.
These calls are fraudulent and are not originating from the Brantford Police Service. This appears to be an instance of caller ID spoofing, a tactic commonly used in scams to mislead individuals and gain their trust.
Important Reminder to the Public:
-
All outgoing calls from the Brantford Police Service will display as “No Caller ID.”
-
The Brantford Police Service will never demand personal or financial information over the phone.
-
If you are ever unsure about the identity of a caller claiming to be a police officer, we strongly advise you to hang up immediately and call our non-emergency dispatch line at 519-756-7050 to verify.
-
Communications staff can confirm if the officer name is legitimate and, if needed, will connect you directly to the officer.
We urge all residents to remain vigilant and to speak with family members—especially vulnerable persons and seniors—about phone-based scams.
