The Brantford Police Service is advising members of the public about an extortion scam after receiving reports from victims who were targeted through threatening text messages.

In reported incidents, victims received text messages containing threats of harm directed at them and their family. The messages may also include images or videos of masked individuals wearing tactical-style gear, intended to intimidate victims into sending money.

These threats are designed to create fear and pressure victims into making immediate payments.

What to Do If You Receive These Messages

The Brantford Police Service reminds the public:

  • Do not engage with the sender
  • Do not send money or provide any personal information
  • Hang up / stop communication immediately
  • Call police right away to report the incident

Additional Safety Tips

  • Block the number and report it through your mobile provider where possible.
  • Save evidence (screenshots of messages, phone numbers, videos, and any payment demands).
  • Do not click links or download unknown files.
  • Warn family members, especially youth and seniors, who may be targeted.

The Brantford Police Service encourages anyone who has been contacted in a similar manner to report the incident by contacting 519-756-7050.
