CRIME BRIEF: October 28, 2021

Type:              Impaired 
Incident:         21-41928
Location:       Dalhousie Street / Queen Street
 
On Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at approximately 4:00 a.m., officers were on patrol in the area of Queen Street and Dalhousie Street when they were alerted to a suspicious vehicle by a citizen.
 
Officers attended to the vehicle and observed a male asleep in the driver’s seat. The motor vehicle was running. While speaking with the accused, officers observed signs of impairment. Drug paraphernalia was observed in clear view. 
 
Police formed reasonable grounds to lay a charge of Impaired Operation and the accused was placed under arrest.
 
Search incident to arrest revealed several bags of suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia within the vehicle.
 
The accused was transported for a Drug Evaluation to be completed by a drug evaluator expert. The accused performed poorly.  
 
As a result of the investigation, a 70-year-old man from Brantford stands charged with the following offence: 
Impaired Operation contrary to the Criminal Code
 
Additionally, a licence suspension was issued and the vehicle impounded as per law.

Location:       Cayuga / Greenwich Street
 
On Sunday, October 24, 2021, at approximately 8:00 a.m., officers on patrol with the Brantford Police Service observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Mary Street towards Iroquois Street. The vehicle was observed passing a transport truck in a prohibited area and failed to come to a stop at the signed intersection of Mary Street and Murray Street. 
 
Officers conducted a traffic stop at Greenwich and Cayuga Street. Two occupants were inside the vehicle.
 
Information was received to advise the driver was operating the vehicle with a suspended licence. The driver was then arrested for driving while under suspension.  
 
Search incident to arrest located the following:
Suspected Cocaine – approximately 6.88 grams 
Suspected Crack Cocaine – approximately 4.51 grams 
Suspected Fentanyl – approximately 7.34 grams 
Suspected Crystal Meth – approximately 43.15 grams 
Suspected Oxycodone
Canadian currency
Drug paraphernalia
Multiple identification documents belonging to several individuals
 
Additionally, during the booking process, approximately 0.42 grams of suspected Fentanyl was located in possession of the accused male who had been driving the vehicle. 
 
As a result of this investigation, Derek Ewan William WINTER, 44, of Brantford, stands charged with a number of Highway Traffic Act violations as well as the following:
Possession for the Purpose x 4 contrary to the Controlled Drug Substance Act
Possession of a Controlled Substance x 2 contrary to the Controlled Drug Substance Act 
Possession of Identity Document x 7 contrary to the Criminal Code
 
Jonathan Stephen William KUN, 42, Brantford stands charged with: 
Possession for the Purpose Contrary to the Controlled Drug Substance Act x 4, and 
Possession of a Controlled Substance Contrary to the Controlled Drug Substance Act 
 
Both of the accused were held for bail. 


 

Type:              Impaired 
Incident:         21-41692
Location:       King George Road
 
On Sunday, October 24, 2021, at approximately 2:15 a.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service received a call to attend a location on King George Road in regards to an impaired driver. 
 
Witnesses observed a man who appeared to be asleep at the wheel of his vehicle while stopped at a yield sign located at the intersection of Charing Cross Street and King George Road. A concerned citizen attempted to wake the accused by knocking on his car window. The accused then drove his vehicle to the nearby parking lot located on King George Road.
 
Officers arrived on scene and located the accused with his vehicle. Signs of impairment were observed and an opened bottle of liquor was observed within reach of the driver.
 
At 2:25 a.m., the accused was placed under arrest for Impaired Operation. 
 
The accused provided two samples of his breath as required by law. Both samples were over twice the legal limit.
 
As a result, a 28-year-old man from St. George stands charged with the following: 
Operation While Impaired contrary to the Criminal Code 
80 Plus contrary to the Criminal Code, and
Having care or control of a motor vehicle with an unsealed container of liquor readily available contrary to the Liquor Licence Act 
 
A licence suspension was issued and the vehicle impounded as per law.


 
Type:                Indecent Act
Incident:        21-41618
Location:       Waterloo Street
 
On Saturday, October 23, 2021, at approximately 12:30 p.m., officers with the Brantford Police were dispatched in relation to an indecent act observed by a citizen.
 
An adult male was reported to have been observed outside a Waterloo Street residence, with his genitals out, masturbating. 
 
Officers attended the scene, spoke with the witness and the accused. 
 
As a result of this investigation, a 46-year-old male of Brantford, stands charged with the following Criminal Code violations: 
Indecent Act 
Nudity - Exposed to public view 
 

Type:                Impaired - Drug
Incident:     21-41653
Location:       Erie Avenue
 
On Saturday, October 23, 2021, officers on patrol with the Brantford Police Service observed a suspicious vehicle within a convenience store parking lot on Erie Avenue.
 
The vehicle was running, with the driver observed to be asleep behind the wheel.
 
Officers woke the male and when speaking with the accused, observed signs of impairment.
 
As a result, the accused was arrested for Operation while Impaired. While the arrest was being made, the accused attempted to resist.
 
Search incident to arrest found open liquor within the vehicle, and a bag containing a white powdered substance believed to be illegal narcotics.
 
A Drug Evaluation was completed by a drug evaluator expert. The accused performed poorly.

As a result, a 26-year-old man from Brantford stands charged with the following:
Operation while impaired contrary to the Criminal Code, 
Resist arrest, contrary to the Criminal Code, 
Possession of schedule I, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and 
Having care or control of a motor vehicle with open liquor readily available contrary to the Liquor Licence Act. 
A licence suspension was issued and the vehicle impounded as per law.


 
Type:                Theft – Motor Vehicle
Incident:        21-41339
Location:       Wellington Street
 
On Thursday, October 21, 2021, at approximately 2:25 p.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service were dispatched to attend a location on Wellington Street regarding a suspicious person.
 
When police arrived on scene they located the accused, who matched a suspect captured on video involved in a previously reported motor vehicle theft. 
 
When the accused observed police, he fled on foot. Officers engaged in a foot pursuit and successfully arrested the accused man. 
 
A search incident to arrest located the key belonging to the stolen motor vehicle (which was recovered), along with approximately 1.53 grams of suspected methamphetamine. 
 
As a result, Jesse Richard JUKES, 27, of Brantford (No Fixed Address), stands charged with the following: 
Theft of Motor Vehicle
Possession Under $5000.00 
Possession of a Controlled Substance  

Man charged with Attempted Murder after Serious Assault

The Brantford Police Service are seeking witnesses of a serious assault to contact detectives with any information or video they may have.
 
At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 21,, 2021, members of the Brantford Police Service patrol section responded to an assault in the area of Richmond Street and Brant Avenue.

Upon arrival, police encountered a male suspect assaulting a male victim.  

The victim was transported to a nearby trauma center with life threatening injuries and remains in critical condition.

A male suspect was taken into custody by officers at the scene of the assault.  

Due to the severity of the injuries, members of the Brantford Police Services Major Crimes Unit are leading the investigation. 

The accused, Barry Foster Kelly, 32, of Brantford (No Fixed Address) is facing charges of attempted murder and possession of weapon for dangerous purpose (knife). The accused was held pending bail.

The accused and the victim were known to one another. Police are not looking for any other suspects. There is no threat to public safety.

CRIME BRIEF: October 20, 2021

Type:                 Theft / Robbery
Incident:          21-40389, 21-40405,
Location:         King George Road, Lynden Road

On Thursday, October 14, 2021, at approximately 7:45 p.m., the Brantford Police Service received a call to report a theft from a retail store located at Lynden Road and Wayne Gretzky Parkway.
 
Information was received to advise a male had stolen a bicycle and fled the store.
 
On the same date, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the Brantford Police Service received a call to report a robbery at a gas bar, located at King George Road and Charing Cross Street. The description of the suspect male matched that of the theft which had occurred earlier the same day. 
 
The accused was reported to have entered the gas bar, advised he had a weapon, stole an item, and fled the scene. No injuries were reported during the incident. A weapon was not observed during the incident.
 
Officers located the accused near the area of Queen Street and Dalhousie Street. The accused was in possession of the stolen items. Information was received to indicate the male was in violation of valid probation orders. 
 
As a result of the investigation, a 37-year-old male of Brantford (No Fixed Address) was arrested and stands charged with the following Criminal Code violations: 
  • Robbery with theft 
  • Theft under $5000 - shoplifting 
  • Possession of stolen goods under $5000 x 2
  • Breach of probation x 2

The accused was held for bail.
 


Type:                Threats – Imitation Firearm
Incident:        21-40524
Location:       North Park Street

On Friday, October 15, 2021, at approximately 8:10 p.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service received a call regarding a disturbance at the Bison’s Alumni Field located at North Park Street.
 
An altercation between two male youth allegedly occurred, with one youth reported to have brandished a firearm, threatening the other youth. A physical altercation followed, with the accused assaulting the victim as he attempted to leave the scene.
 
Police arrived on scene and located the accused in the area.
 
Police located the firearm and determined that it was an imitation semi-automatic pistol style firearm. 
 
As a result of the investigation, a 13-year-old male (youth) from Brantford, stands charged with the following Criminal Code violations: 
  • Use imitation firearm - while committing an offence 
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose 
  • Uttering threats
  • Assault
 

 
Type:                    Break and Enter
Incident:             21-40600
Location:            Fifth Avenue

On Saturday, October 16, 2021, at approximately 11:45 a.m., officers the Brantford Police Service were dispatched to attend a break and enter at an apartment located on Fifth Avenue. 
 
It was reported that the accused was creating a disturbance in the hallway when he was asked to be quiet by a resident. The accused allegedly forced his way into the victim’s apartment, damaging the wall and door. Utilizing a knife from the resident’s apartment, the accused threatened the victim. When the victim attempted to call 9-1-1, the accused destroyed the victim’s cell phone and fled the victim’s apartment.
 
Officers arrived on scene, observed the accused male on the balcony of an alternate unit.
 
Officers deescalated the situation, verified the safety and well-being of residents, and placed the accused under arrest.
 
Information was received to indicate the accused was in violation of a valid probation order. 
 
As a result of this investigation, Michael Alexander BERUBE, 27 of Brantford, stands charged with the following Criminal Code violations: 
  • Break and Enter 
  • Mischief Under $5000 
  • Utter Threats to Cause Death 
  • Assault with a Weapon 
  • Possess Weapon Dangerous 
  • Breach Probation 
 
The accused was held for bail. 

 

 
Type:               Theft / Possession
Incident:        21-40750
Location:       Fairview Drive and West Street
 
On Sunday, October 17, 2021 at approximately 2:45 p.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service responded to a shoplifting call for service at a grocery store located at Fairview Drive and West Street.
 
The accused allegedly concealed a number of items, leaving the store without making an attempt to pay for the items. When the accused was approached by a store employee, he fled on foot, leaving the stolen items behind.
 
Officers attended, located the accused nearby, where he was arrested.
 
During a search incident to arrest, the accused was found to be in possession of approximately 0.57 grams of suspected fentanyl (two types) and approximately 1.75 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine. 
 
As a result of the investigation, a 42-year-old male of Brantford stands charged with: 
  • Theft under $5000 - shoplifting - contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada, and 
  • Possession of Schedule I Substance - contrary to the Controlled Drugs & Substances Act X 3. 





Type:                Unlawful Entry
Incident:        21-41052
Location:       Wellington Street

On the Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at approximately 4:00 p.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service were dispatched to a Wellington Street residence regarding a report of an unwanted person.
 
The victim located an unknown man exiting the front door of the residence. A number of personal items, belonging to the accused were found within the residence. The accused did not have permission to be within the property.  
 
Police arrived on scene, located the accused on the property and placed him under arrest.
 
Information received indicated the accused was in violation of a valid probation order.
 
A search incident to arrest revealed the accused was in possession of break-in instruments. 
 
As a result of the investigation, Jeremy PORTH, 35, of Brantford (No Fixed Address) stands charged with the following Criminal Code violations: 
  • Breach of probation order 
  • Unlawfully in dwelling/house 
  • Possession of break-in instruments 
 

SIU Investigation

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the discharge of an Anti-Riot Weapon ENfield (ARWEN) by Brantford Police Service officers at a man in a Brantford residence this morning (October 19, 2021).

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 6 a.m., on October 19, 2021, the Brantford Police Service were called to a residence on Tanglewood Terrace for a person in crisis. 
  • Upon arrival, there was an interaction with the man and officers discharged an ARWEN.
  • The man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital for assessment.

While it is unknown at this time if the man was seriously injured, the SIU’s mandate was invoked because a police officer discharged an ARWEN, which is classified as a firearm. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, a firearm is defined as a barreled weapon from which any shot, bullet or other projectile can be discharged and that is capable of causing serious bodily injury or death to a person.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
 
As the SIU has invoked their mandate, the Brantford Police Service is unable to provide comment regarding this incident.

23-year-old Facing Numerous Firearm Related Charges after Gun Located at Football Game

On Sunday, October 17, 2021, at approximately 2:00 p.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service were dispatched to attend a firearm related call for service.

Officers were advised that a restricted firearm was located (unloaded) in the personal property of one of the players during a football game held at the Bison’s Alumni / North Park Sports Complex located at North Park Street. 
 
Officers attended the location. The firearm and cartridge magazine, both restricted items, were turned over to police custody. At this time, officers observed the serial number of the firearm had been tampered with and was no longer legible.  

Additionally, the accused was found to be in violation of a valid release order.

As a result of this investigation, Branden MCCRANEY, 23, of Windsor, stands charged with the following Criminal Code violations:

Careless use, storage, handling, and transport of firearm x 2
Carrying a weapon while attending public meeting x 2
Carry concealed weapon x 2
Unauthorized possession of firearm 
Unauthorized possession of prohibited device 
Possession of firearm knowing it is unauthorized 
Possession of prohibited device knowing it is unauthorized  
Tampering with serial number 
Failure to comply with Judicial Release Order

The accused was held for bail.

Two Arrested and Over $38,000 in Drugs Seized in Street Crime Investigation

On Thursday, October 14, 2021, members of the Brantford Police Service Street Crime Unit entered into a drug trafficking investigation. 

As a result of the investigation a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant was obtained and executed at two separate motels located on Colborne Street with the assistance of the BPS Emergency Response Team and uniform patrol officers. 

As a result of the search warrant, officers have seized various offence related property including the following:
  • Two 9mm semi-automatic pistol with ammunition,
  • 12-gauge shotgun ammunition
  • A quantity of suspected cocaine, methamphetamine, psilocybin, oxycodone and hydromorphone with an estimated street value in excess of $38,000 
  • Prohibited knives
  • Canadian currency

As a result of this investigation, Jesse Daniel FUDGE, 33, of Brantford, stands charged with the following Criminal Code violations:
  • Careless storage of a firearm x 2
  • Careless storage of ammunition x 2
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm x 2
  • Possess a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized x 2
  • Possess restricted firearm with ammunition x 2
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose x 4
  • Possession of firearm while prohibited x 2
  • Possession of ammunition while prohibited x 2

The accused also stands charged with the following Controlled Drugs and Substances Act violations: 
  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, to wit; Cocaine 
  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, to wit; Oxycodone x 2
  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, to wit; Hydromorphone x 2
  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, to wit; Methamphetamine

Kaitlyn Mary HUNTER, 32, of Brantford stands charged with the following Criminal Code violations:
  • Careless storage of a firearm x 2 
  • Careless storage of ammunition x 2
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm x 2
  • Possess a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized x 2
  • Possess restricted firearm with ammunition x 2
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose x 4
  • Possession of firearm while prohibited x 4
  • Possession of ammunition while prohibited x 4

The accused also stands charged with the following Controlled Drugs and Substances Act violations: 
  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, to wit; Cocaine 
  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, to wit; Oxycodone x 2
  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, to wit; Hydromorphone x 2
  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, to wit; Methamphetamine

The accused parties have been held for bail.

31-year-old Male Charged with Aggravated Assault

On Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at approximately 3:55 p.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service attended the intersection of Market Street and Marlborough Street after receiving a report of a disturbance. 

Police arrived on scene and were advised that two men had been engaged in a physical altercation.

During the altercation, the victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to hospital where he received treatment.

Officers located the accused at a nearby location, where he was taken into custody without incident.  

As a result of the investigation, Thomas Ray WORME, 31, of Brantford (no fixed address), stands charged with the following Criminal Code violations: 
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Aggravated Assault

The accused was held for bail.

Methamphetamine and Fentanyl Seized – Two Charged

On Friday, October 8, 2021 at approximately 3:20 a.m., Community Patrol Officers with the Brantford Police Service observed a motor vehicle parked at a convenience store parking lot with licence plates that had previously been reported as stolen. The parking lot was located at Colborne Street and Park Avenue. 
 
Through investigation, officers confirmed the male driver and female passenger from the vehicle, who were arrested as they exited the store.
 
Search incident to arrest located the following items:
  • Approximately 23.68 grams of suspected Fentanyl with an estimated street value of $6,390
  • Approximately 5.98 grams of suspected Cocaine with an estimated street value of $650
  • Approximately 7.26 grams of suspected Crystal Methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $1,900
  • A quantity of Canadian currency 

Information received indicated that the accused male was in violation of valid probation orders and driving suspensions.
 
As a result of the investigation, Evan Garret BESNER, 34, of Thorold, stands charged with the following:

  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking x 8 – contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Possession of Stolen Property under $5,000  x 2 – contrary to the Criminal Code 
  • Breach of Probation Order x 3 – contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Drive while under suspension x 3 – contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
 
And, Ashley Anne MULLIGAN, 29, of Niagara Falls, stands charged with the following:

  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking x 8 – contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Possession of Stolen Property under $5,000  x 2 – contrary to the Criminal Code 
 
Both of the accused were held for bail.

Suspicious Fire: Grey Street at Garden Avenue

In collaboration with the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office, the Brantford Police Service is currently investigating a suspicious fire that occurred at approximately 6:00 a.m. on Monday October 11, 2021 at Grey Street and Garden Avenue.
 
While there were no injuries, twelve townhomes which were under construction received extensive damage as a result of the fire. The property damage sustained will result in considerable loss to the property owner.

BPS Seeking Witnesses of Fatal Motorcycle Collision

The Brantford Police Service is seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed a single motorcycle collision which occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m., Sunday, October 10, 2021 on Grand River Avenue near Waterworks Park.
 
Despite life-saving efforts, one occupant of the motorcycle, a 42-year-old male, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The second occupant, a 25-year-old male, was transported to hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
 
Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have dash cam footage of the incident is asked to contact Constable K. Renzini at 519-756-7050 ext. 2212.
