BPS investigate early morning shooting

Members of the Brantford Police Service Major Crime Unit and Forensic Identification Section are on scene in the area of Stauffer Road and Tarrison Street after receiving reports of shots fired.
Shortly after 2 a.m., May 29, 2023, police responded to the area and located several shell casings. Investigation revealed a house on Stauffer Road was hit with gunfire, however there were no reported injuries. A vehicle was seen leaving the area after the shooting. No arrests have been made.
Police are asking for residents in the neighbourhood who have video to check the footage between 1:45 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Officers will be canvassing the area this morning and available to speak with anyone who may have information.
This location is in close proximity to a shooting that occurred on March 9, 2023, in which a male victim was struck with a bullet while working in the area. These two incidents are not believed to be related and a 21-year-old Brantford man is facing charges in the prior investigation.
As this investigation is active and ongoing, additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

BPS investigate Birkett Lane townhome fire

The Brantford Police Service are seeking information from the public after a May 15, 2023, fire that occurred at a Birkett Lane and Erie Avenue location. The fire resulted in extensive damage to a section of new townhouses still under construction.
On Monday, May 15, 2023, at approximately 12:30 a.m., emergency services responded to a report of a residential fire.
Upon arrival, emergency services observed several new townhome units engulfed in flames. The units were not yet occupied by residents. There were no reports received of physical injuries.
The Brantford Fire Department extinguished the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

BPS seek suspect information in sexual assault investigation

In a joint investigation with Hamilton Police Services, Detectives with the Brantford Police Service continue to investigate a sexual assault and are now seeking the assistance of the public to identify a vehicle involved in the offence.
On Thursday, April 27, 2023, at approximately 3:30 a.m., an adult female pedestrian was abducted from the area of Barton Street East and Wellington Street, Hamilton, by an unknown male suspect.

The suspect was driving a red 2-door Jeep Wrangler with a black hard top and black plastic fenders.
The victim was drugged and driven to a remote location in Brantford where she was sexually assaulted and abandoned.
The suspect is described as a white male, late 30’s to early 40’s years of age, approximately 5’11’, with a medium to heavy build, balding with a brown goatee beard, wearing frameless eyeglasses. The suspect was reported to have a tattoo on his right upper arm.
Sharing details of this sexual assault is intended to provide the community information, create awareness, and generate information to assist investigators.

BPS HEAT Unit arrest Brantford man in drug trafficking investigation; seize firearms and over $41,000 in illicit drugs

On Wednesday, May 24, 2023, members of the Brantford Police Service High Enforcement Action Team (H.E.A.T.) completed a drug trafficking investigation, arresting a Brantford man on drug trafficking and firearms related charges. Officers seized a loaded firearm and over $41,000 in suspected fentanyl and methamphetamine.
Members of the Brantford Police Service High Enforcement Action Team (H.E.A.T.) launched a drug trafficking investigation Tuesday, April 25, 2023, regarding a man who was allegedly selling methamphetamine and fentanyl from a Dunsdon Street residence.
Through investigation, officers received judicial authorization through a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) search warrant for the Dunsdon Street residence.
On Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at approximately 5:45 a.m., members of the Brantford Police Services Emergency Response Team (E.R.T) executed the search warrant. The Brantford Police Service K-9 Unit, IDENT Unit and Uniform Patrol also provided assistance. The suspect was located within the residence and arrested without incident.

Search incident to arrest located the following:
- Approximately 100.8 grams of suspected fentanyl (schedule I) with an estimated street value of $40,320
- Approximately 3.7 grams of suspected methamphetamine (schedule I) with an estimated street value of $740
- Loaded 12-gauge shotgun
- Ammunition
- A pellet gun
- Drug paraphernalia
- Canadian currency
The total estimated street value of seized drugs located on the accused is $41,060.
Additionally, it was determined that the accused was bound by a valid Release Order and in violation of five separate firearms prohibition orders.
As a result of the investigation, James MACKIE, 31, of Brantford, stands charged with the following offences:
- Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Fentanyl), contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
- Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Methamphetamine), contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
- Careless Storage of Firearm (Prohibited Shotgun), contrary to the Criminal Code
- Possession of Weapon (Pellet Gun) for Dangerous Purpose, contrary to the Criminal Code
- Possession of Weapon (Prohibited Shotgun), contrary to the Criminal Code
- Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm (Prohibited Shotgun), contrary to the Criminal Code
- Possession of Firearm (Prohibited Shotgun), contrary to order x 5, contrary to the Criminal Code
- Failure to Comply with Judicial Release Order, contrary to the Criminal Code
- Possession of Firearm (Prohibited Shotgun), with Ammunition, contrary to the Criminal Code
- Possession of Ammunition, contrary to order x 5, contrary to the Criminal Code
- Possession of Firearm (Pellet Gun), contrary to order x 5, contrary to the Criminal Code
The accused was held for bail.

BPS issuing auto theft awareness reminder
The Brantford Police Service are issuing an auto theft awareness reminder to the public regarding a vehicle theft trend previously reported in the City of Brantford. This trend, while only one method utilized by criminals to steal vehicles, is known as "Relay and Reprogramming” technology. In an effort to increase awareness to help make vehicles more secure and less attractive to thieves, we are issuing a reminder.
Reports indicate that the vehicles targeted by relay and reprogramming technology are newer model, high-end vehicles with keyless entry and push start technology. The thefts typically occur in the overnight hours.
While not all motor vehicle thefts occur using this technology, by increasing awareness, it is the goal of BPS to reduce vehicle thefts. In 2022, 321 vehicles were reported as stolen to the Brantford Police Service. 89 vehicles have been reported stolen to date in 2023.

How does relay vehicle theft work?
The suspect will approach a residence and use technology to find a key fob signal from inside a residence. The technology allows the suspects to remain outside the residence to amplify and transfer the key fob signal in order to unlock, start and steal the vehicle. The theft of the vehicle will typically be undetected until the morning when the owner discovers their vehicle has been stolen and they are still in possession of their key fob.
How does reprogramming vehicle theft work?
The suspects will approach the vehicle and force entry inside. Once inside the vehicle an electronic device is used to access the vehicles diagnostics. The suspects then reprogram a blank key fob so the vehicle can be started and steal the vehicle.
How to protect your vehicle from theft?
- Park your vehicle inside a locked and secure garage.
- Block the access to the onboard diagnostic port to prevent thieves from reprograming the vehicle’s key fob. (A simple device can be purchased online).
- Use a steering wheel locking device to deter theft.
- Place the vehicle key fob inside a radio frequency shielding bag/pouch to block cell signals when not in use. Inside your residence and in a purse or pocket.
- Consider equipping your vehicle with an aftermarket global positioning system (GPS) tracker. The tracker may assist police in locating the vehicle and/or suspects.
- Ensure all keys are accounted for and never left in the vehicle or unattended.
- Lock your vehicle at all times.
- Never leave your vehicle running and unattended.
- Consider purchasing a surveillance system and ensure the quality and function will capture any suspicious activity for a 24-hour period.
If you observe suspicious people in your neighborhood, looking into vehicles, we encourage you to report this to police immediately. Doing so will assist investigators to track patterns of criminal behavior and potentially identify suspects.

BPS seek public information to identify suspect in hate-motivated incident

The Brantford Police Service continue to investigate a report of hate-motivated incident and are seeking assistance from the public in an effort to identify the suspect.
On Sunday, May 7, 2023, at approximately 11:00 A.M., officers with the Brantford Police were dispatched to a location near Brant’s Crossing Riverfront Park, Icomm Drive, after receiving a report of a disturbance where a man is alleged to have been threatened and assaulted by a suspect.
A man on a dirt bike was reported to be driving recklessly in the area when he became involved in a verbal dispute with the victim. At this time, it was reported that racially charged threats of death were made towards the victim. The accused is also reported to have damaged the victim’s bicycle.
Before fleeing the area, the accused is then reported to have used his dirt bike to spin the back tire to throw rocks at the victim.
Shown in the photograph below, the suspect vehicle is described as a red dirt bike with a white fender panel and was last seen travelling on Icomm Drive towards Colborne Street West.
No physical injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

The accused is described as approximately 5'6”, thin, white, male, in his 20’s, wearing an open visor style helmet.
As a result of this incident, grounds exist for the following charges: assault with a weapon, utter death threats, mischief, dangerous operation and operate motor vehicle - preform stunt. Based on the information reported, the incident is believed to be racially motivated.
Hate-motivated crimes not only affect individual victims, but also negatively impact the community at large.
These types of crimes have consequences that reach far beyond a specific incident and are particularly concerning because they can foster community unrest. The Brantford Police Service is invested in the betterment of our community and works diligently to provide a safe and inclusive community for all of Brantford’s residents.

38-year-old Brantford man faces 52 counts of mischief for Downtown graffiti

A 38-year-old Brantford man faces 52 charges of mischief under $5,000 after spray painting multiple locations in Downtown Brantford.
A total of 52 different addresses were damaged with over 90 individual spray-painted locations.

Through investigation, Brantford Police Service Special Constables identified the suspect who was arrested at approximately 7:50 p.m., April 25, 2023, at a Colborne Street East location.
As a result of the investigation, a 38-year-old man from Brantford, stands charged with 52 counts of Mischief under $5,000 contrary to the Criminal Code.
The accused was requested to be held for bail.

BPS seek to identify suspects in retail electronics thefts

The Brantford Police Service continue to investigate retail theft of high-end electronics from multiple locations and are seeking information from the public in an effort to identify the person(s) responsible.
On Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at approximately 6:15 p.m., a retail theft occurred at a Lynden Road location where two male suspects allegedly stole a large quantity of high-end electronics including smart watches and cellular phones. The suspects are believed to be responsible for three other similar retail thefts within the city occurring April 23, 26 and 29, 2023.

The Brantford Police Service are joining police services across Canada to recognize Police Week, May 14-20, 2023 (#PoliceWeekON, #CommittedtoServe), which celebrates the work of front-line police officers, special constables, auxiliary members, 911 communicators and civilian staff in their ongoing dedication to keep residents safe.
May 14, 2023, marks the beginning of National Police Week – a seven-day public awareness campaign that encourages increased awareness and understanding between police and the communities they serve.
This year, we recognize the oath officers proudly take to be "committed to serve” to our community residents who want and expect the police to keep them safe.
Police Week was first observed in 1970 and coincides with the Peace Officers Memorial Day, which was recognized this year on May 8.

44-year-old man arrested and charged after cannabis store assault and robbery

A 44-year-old Brantford man is facing charges in relation to an assault and robbery at a cannabis retail location.
On Saturday, April 29, 2023, at approximately 9:45 a.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service were dispatched to attend an assault and robbery related call at a cannabis retail store located on Dalhousie Street.
The accused is reported to have entered the store, allegedly assaulting an employee with a shirt containing rocks before fleeing on foot with a laptop.
The victim sustained minor physical injuries as a result of the attack.
Officers attended and located the accused nearby. After a short foot chase, the accused was apprehended to police custody.
The laptop was recovered.
Further investigation revealed the accused was also wanted on a parole revocation warrant.
As a result, a 44-year-old man from Brantford stands charged with the following Criminal Code violations:
- Assault with a weapon
- Robbery
- Obstruct Police Officer
The accused was held for bail.
