Drug Risk Awareness

May 18, 2020

The Brantford Police Service continues to investigate and respond to calls involving citizens who have suffered apparent drug over doses. A recent police investigation discovered white coloured pills are being sold on the street as Percocet or Oxycodone which may also contain other substances such as Fentanyl.  The Branford Police Service is reminding the community of the risks associated with drug use. If you choose to use, please use extreme caution as the drugs that you are using may not be what you are expecting and may contain other substances such as fentanyl.  If you are a new drug user you are particularly at risk should you use fentanyl or drugs cut with fentanyl.

Know what to do if you think someone is overdosing and call 9-1-1- immediately. If it’s available give the person naloxone. Naloxone is an emergency medication that reverses the effects of an overdose from opioids such as fentanyl, heroin, methadone, morphine. You can give naloxone while you wait for emergency services to arrive. Remember naloxone can temporarily reverse an overdose but it can wear off before the person has completely recovered. Always call 9-1-1 and be seen by a medical professional.  Even if you have taken drugs or have drugs on you, the Good Samaritan Law can protect you.

While we advise against using illicit drugs, people who choose to use should be sure to:
*never use alone
*start with a small amount
*not mix substances, including alcohol, as it increases risk of overdose
*call 911 right away if they think someone is overdosing
*make a plan and know how to respond in case of an overdose
*use where help is easily available
*be prepared to give breaths and/or administer Naloxone (Narcan) until help
arrives. Have a kit accessible at all times and KNOW how to use it.

Know the signs of an overdose:
*Can’t stay awake
*No strength or energy
*Cold, clammy skin
*Slow heartbeat
* Trouble breathing
*Slow, shallow breathing
*Gurgling or snoring sounds
*lips and/or fingernails blue or purple
*non-responsive to shouting

Celebrating Police Week May 10-16, 2020

May 11, 2020

Brantford Police Service Celebrating Police Week
Front-line Police Officers and Police Personnel Honoured for Their Work in Keeping our Communities Safe

(BRANTFORD, ON) – The Brantford Police Service is joining police services across Ontario and Canada in kicking off Police Week (#PoliceWeekON), a celebration of the work our front-line police officers, 9-1-1 communicators, civilian staff, and all members of our police service do to keep our citizens safe and healthy, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year, Police Week runs from May 10 to 16, 2020. The theme in Ontario for the week is Leading the Way to Safer Communities, which focuses on the many ways that our police members help promote the safety and well-being of everyone in our communities.

"Police Week was first observed in 1970 and coincides with the Peace Officers Memorial Day, which is recognized internationally on May 15. While the Covid-19 pandemic means that our police personnel will not be able to go out into our communities and engage with members of the community as they have traditionally done during Police Week, we invite the public to reach out through social media or other means that use appropriate social distancing to thank our police officers and members for all they do to keep our communities safe”, said Robin Matthews-Osmond, Corporate Communications Manager.

Throughout this week, Brantford Police Service will be highlighting the many ways in which our members are serving our citizens, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. We’ll also be acknowledging how our members are working closely with health care professionals and other first responders in our community to protect our citizens during this pandemic.

"During the Covid-19 pandemic, our police officers have literally been putting their lives on the line in serving our community,” said Robin Matthews-Osmond, Corporate Communications Manager. "They have worked hard with health care professionals and other first responders to keep residents safe during this unprecedented health challenge. During Police Week, we encourage community members to say ‘Thank You!’ to our hardworking officers and police personnel.”

The annual Police Week in Ontario is sponsored by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) and the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General. It is part of a national effort across Canada led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police to recognize and honour the work of police service members.

Canada Road Safety Week, May 12-18, 2020

May 7, 2020

Brantford, ON – Tuesday, May 12 to Monday, May 18, 2020 marks Canada Road Safety Week, a 7-day public education campaign aimed at making Canada’s roads the safest in the world by promoting safe driving behaviours. This annual awareness campaign is designed to increase public compliance with safe driving measures in order to save lives and reduce injuries on Canada’s roads.

Despite the fact that most drivers claim to be aware of the laws and regulations related to impaired driving, distracted driving and aggressive driving, many do not appear to fully
understand the various behaviours that define each of these infractions and, if they do, some continue to break the rules. This is why this year’s campaign theme is about "Shifting Gears”. We are encouraging drivers to "think differently” about problematic driving behaviours by broadening their understanding of the rules. We are also inviting them to acknowledge the bad habits they may not have realized they had and to "change their driving behaviours” accordingly.

The Brantford Police Service makes educating the public in safe driving practices a road safety priority.  An essential part of our job is to save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways.  This year, the focus of our campaign continues to be on the behaviours that put drivers, passengers and all road users at risk of fatal or serious injury collisions.  Our enforcement initiative will focus on impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving and speeding.

The Brantford Police Service is committed to increase public compliance with safe driving in order to prevent collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads. As a driver, your actions can increase road safety.  Please adjust your actions behind the wheel to make our roads safer for everyone.

The Brantford Police Service is proud to be participating in this year’s Canada Road Safety Campaign. While this public safety initiative is part of a national effort to help advance Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2025 to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world, we are confident that our local efforts will help make the roads here in Brantford among the safest in Canada.
