Sep 19, 2023

image of statistics

The Brantford Police Service Traffic Unit (BPS) continues to be focused on the enforcement of modified vehicles, noisy mufflers, and general driver safety.

The BPS makes educating the public in safe driving practices and road safety a priority. An essential part of our job is to save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways.

From Thursday, September 14 to Saturday, September 16, 2023, the BPS Traffic Unit conducted a road safety blitz with a focus to address the community’s concerns regarding the noise pollution of excessively loud vehicles, modified vehicles, and noisy mufflers on roadways. We will continue to be conducting enforcement and sharing public education regarding vehicles making unreasonable and unnecessary noise as well as an increased focus on improperly modified vehicles.

As a result of this enforcement initiative from September 14-16, 2023, 51 charges were issued for the offences related to modified vehicles and excessive noise.

A focus of this ongoing project is to reduce the number of motor vehicles with modified and/or excessively loud exhaust systems on the roads. Vehicles will be subject to charges, including Improper Muffler and Unnecessary Noise, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). The penalties under the HTA include fines of $110 upon conviction.

Vehicles found to be unlawfully modified will be reported to the Insurance Bureau of Canada with the potential of a policy suspension.

We encourage vehicle owners to repair modified exhaust systems and avoid using devices such as factory-issued mechanisms to alter and increase their vehicles' sound in quiet, residential areas.

Anyone with information concerning modified or unsafe vehicles can contact the Brantford Police Service by calling 519-756-0113. Information or driving complaints can also be reported by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

The local roadways are to be shared and enjoyed by everyone, please keep this in mind when operating a motor vehicle. The Brantford Police Service is committed to increase public compliance with safe driving in order to prevent collisions, save lives, and reduce injuries on our roads.

Brantford Police Service is a proud partner in rail-safety, supporting Operation Clear Track

Sep 18, 2023

The Brantford Police Service is proud to be joining forces with law enforcement agencies across North America today for "Operation Clear Track”— the single largest rail-safety law-enforcement initiative in North America.

Coordinated by Amtrak, Operation Lifesaver Inc. and Operation Lifesaver Canada, Operation Clear Track aims to reduce railway crossing and trespassing incidents in Canada and the U.S. — incidents which seriously injure or kill more than 2,100 people each year. The event is held annually during Rail Safety Week (September 18-24, 2023).

"This Rail Safety Week we remind the public to always treat rail crossings throughout the city and region with extreme caution and respect.  Passenger and freight trains travel at a high rate of speed and do not have the ability to stop quickly. Please obey all rail crossing indicators for your safety and the safety of others,” said Robin Matthews-Osmond, Corporate Communications Manager, Brantford Police Service.

"Ignoring railway signs and signals, being distracted at rail stations or crossings, or using tracks as a shortcut or a recreational path can have tragic consequences,” said Sarah Mayes, National Director of Operation Lifesaver Canada. "Operation Clear Track’s goal is to encourage people to think twice before engaging in unsafe behaviours, and to learn how to keep themselves safe around tracks and trains.”

Hundreds of police and sheriff departments across North America have signed up for Operation Clear Track this year; they’ll be promoting rail safety by enforcing rail crossing and trespassing laws, distributing rail-safety tip sheets to drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, sharing Operation Lifesaver’s #STOPTrackTragedies videos and social media messages, and by posting rail-safety content to their department websites.

For more information about Operation Clear Track, Rail Safety Week and other rail-safety initiatives and tips, please visit:operationlifesaver.ca

The Brantford Police Service is committed to enhancing safety for all, by engaging and supporting a unified community.

About Operation Lifesaver Canada

OL is funded by Transport Canada and the Railway Association of Canada and its members, including CN, CPKC, VIA Rail, exo, West Coast Express, Metrolinx, and Genesee & Wyoming, among others. Through partnerships with safety organizations, law enforcement agencies, the trucking industry, and communities, OL works to prevent injuries and save lives by educating Canadians about the hazards associated with tracks and trains.
