BPS Homicide Investigation

On Wednesday, March 11th, 2020 police responded to a Mintern Avenue residence to conduct a wellbeing check on a female occupant.  Upon arrival, police located 37 year old, Shannon MacDougall deceased inside of the residence.
 
Police worked alongside the Coroner’s office and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service to help determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
 
As a result of the investigation, police are treating the death of Shannon MacDougall as a homicide.
 
To protect the integrity of the investigation, a media release was not distributed earlier due to the manner in which police received the information.
 
Members of the Major Crime section continue to investigate and are seeking help from anyone who may have information on the actions of Shannon in the days prior to March 11, 2020.  

Police do not believe that this was a random incident.

No arrests have been made at this time.

Vehicle Collision Results in Drug Trafficking and Weapons Charges

Incident # 20-46306

On Thursday, November 26, 2020 at approximately 12:30 a.m., Brantford Police Service responded to motor vehicle collision in the area of Golf Road and Powerline Road.

Upon arriving on the scene, officers observed a male fleeing the area. The male was arrested for failing to remain at the scene of the accident.

During the arrest, the male was found to be in possession of a large sum of money; approximately 38.9 grams of Fentanyl with an approximate street value of $10,500; Hydromorphone, Percocet, Clonazepam, Xanax and Dilaudid with a combined estimated street value of $325; and a butterfly knife.

As a result of the investigation, a 19-year-old male from Hamilton is charged with:

  • Possession for the purposes of trafficking x 6
  • Possession of prohibited weapon

The individual was held for bail.

Police Seek Suspect Wanted for Pharmacy Robberies

On Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at approximately 1:15 p.m., Brantford Police Service responded to a 9-1-1 call regarding a robbery at a pharmacy located on West Street near Morton Avenue.
A male entered the store, advised he was armed and demanded cash from a pharmacy employee.
 
The suspect received an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene on foot. Individuals in the pharmacy were unharmed. 
 
As a precautionary measure, a nearby school, Prince Charles Elementary, was temporarily placed into hold and secure while police searched the area for the suspect.
 
While investigating the incident, a second 9-1-1 call was received by Brantford Police Service at approximately 1:47 p.m. to report a robbery at a pharmacy located on Colborne Street East between Queen Street and Charlotte Street.
 
The suspect demanded and received an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect then fled the scene on foot. Individuals in the pharmacy were unharmed. 
 
Brantford Police Service are seeking a male suspect, described as:
  • approximately 6’ tall
  • wearing black jogging pants, a black jacket, white hoodie and a black facemask

Serious Motor Vehicle Collision - Paris Rd at Queensway

Incident # 20-46246

On Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at approximately 7:30 a.m., Brantford Police Service were dispatched to attend a serious motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles in the area of Paris Road and Queensway Drive.
Members of Brantford Fire and Brantford/Brant Paramedics also attended to assist with the injured parties.
 
Preliminary investigation suggests that two vehicles, a pick-up truck and a taxi, were involved in a motor vehicle collision at this location. The driver and sole occupant of the pick-up truck, received treatment for minor injuries. The driver of the taxi also received treatment for minor injuries. The taxi was transporting a female passenger, who was transported to hospital to receive treatment for serious injuries.

The area of Paris Road between Queensway Drive and Tollgate Drive was closed for the majority of the day while investigators from the Traffic Unit conducted their investigation.

Some witnesses came forward at the scene however; the Brantford Police Traffic Unit would like to speak with anyone who may have further information regarding this incident.  Witnesses are encouraged to contact the Brantford Police Service Traffic Unit at 519-756-0113.

Two Arrested After Convenience Store Robbery

On Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at approximately 6:45 p.m., Brantford Police Service responded to a 9-1-1 call regarding a robbery at a convenience store located near Erie Ave and Gladstone Ave.
 
A male and female entered the store and attempted to shoplift several items. After being confronted by the store clerk for shoplifting, the female brandished a firearm and the two suspects fled the scene on bicycles. Individuals in the store were unharmed. 
 
During the incident, the male’s face was exposed and police were able to successfully identify the suspects from images obtained on surveillance video.
 
At approximately 11:40 p.m. that evening, the two suspects were located and placed under arrest. Upon arrest, the firearm utilized in the incident, a CO2 BB air pistol, was located and seized by police.

As a result of the investigation a 41-year-old female of no fixed address, who was wanted on several outstanding warrants, was charged with:

  • Pointing a Firearm
  • Weapons Dangerous
  • Concealed Weapon
  • Robbery with a Firearm

Additionally, a 47-year-old male from Brantford was charged with:

  • Robbery and Failure to Comply with Release Order
The two individuals were held for bail.

Crime Brief: November 17, 2020

Incident:         20-45190
Location:       Morton Avenue
Synopsis:
On Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at approximately 1 a.m., members of the Brantford Police Service conducted a traffic stop in the area of Morton Ave and West Street. 
 
During the investigation, it was revealed that the license plate affixed to the vehicle was registered to a different vehicle and did not belong to the driver. The driver was also operating the motor vehicle with a suspended license.  
 
Upon investigation, it was determined that the subject was also bound by prohibition orders not to possess firearms. Further investigation revealed a quantity of illegal narcotics, a semi-automatic firearm and ammunition within the vehicle.  
 
As a result of the investigation, the following items were seized:
  • 2.4 grams (approx.) of fentanyl
  • 9.5 grams (approx.)of crystal methamphetamine
  • A semi-automatic firearm with ammunition
  • Canadian Currency
 
As such, a 32-year-old male from Brantford is charged with the following offences:
  • Drive while Under Suspension under the Highway Traffic Act
  • Use of Plates Not Authorized under the Highway Traffic Act
  • Unauthorized Possession of Motor Vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act
  • Unauthorized Possession of a firearm under the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Possession of a Prohibited Device under the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Possession of Prohibited Firearm with Ammunition under the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Careless Storage of a Firearm under the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm under the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Possession Contrary to Order x3 under the Criminal Code of Canada 
  • Possession for the Purpose x2 under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

Location:          Sherwood Drive
Synopsis:
On Monday, November 16, 2020 at approximately 4:30 p.m. Brantford Police Service received a 9-1-1 call to advise of an altercation in progress in the area of Sherwood Drive involving a male reported to be violent and in possession of a large knife.
 
Upon arriving at the scene, officers located the suspect male in the parking lot, who was wanted on an existing warrant.
 
As a result of the investigation, multiple knives were seized and a 46-year-old male from Brantford was arrested and charged with the following under the Criminal Code of Canada:
  • Assault
  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Uttering Threats
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose; 
The accused was held for bail.

Location:       Usher Street
Synopsis:
On Sunday, November 15, 2020 at approximately 8:15 a.m., Brantford Police Service received a report of a male walking in the area of Usher Street with a handgun.
 
Officers attended the area, located the male, who was in possession of a loaded firearm, and placed him under arrest at approximately 8:20 a.m. Investigation also revealed that the individual was bound by, and was in breech of, a probation order.

As a result of the investigation, a loaded firearm was seized and a 27-year-old male of no fixed address was charged with the following under the Criminal Code of Canada:
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Carrying Firearm in Unsafe Manner
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm 
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Carrying a Concealed Weapon
  • Careless use of Firearm, Weapon, Ammunition
  • Possession of a Prohibited or restricted Firearm with Ammunition
  • Failure to Comply with Probation Order

Location:       Maitland Street
Synopsis:
On Friday, November 6, 2020 at approximately 8:47 p.m., Brantford Police Service received a 9-1-1 call to report a male had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a residence in the area of Maitland Street and Grey Street.
 
Brantford Police Officers and Emergency Medical Services attended the area, where a male suffering a serious firearm injury to his hand was located. The male received medical attention and was transported to hospital.
 
Upon investigation officers located and recovered a 12 gauge shotgun which was previously reported stolen along with ammunition.
 
As a result of the investigation, a 40-year-old male from Brantford was arrested and charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code of Canada:
  • Careless use of Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of Firearm and Ammunition
  • Careless Storage of a Firearm
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Prohibited Firearm
  • Possession of Firearm Contrary to Order 
  • Possession of Ammunition contrary to Order 
  • Breach of Court Order
  • Possession of Stolen Property Obtained by Crime

PSD SCOUT RETIRES

One of the first Police Service Dogs (PSD) to serve with Brantford Police Service, Scout #349 has retired from service effective November 10, 2020. PSD Scout commenced his career with the Brantford Police Service on June 19, 2014.
 
The Brantford Police Service’s first Canine Unit was formed in the fall of 2013 with two PSD’s – Scout and Ranger. Training commenced and the Canine Unit became operational in the spring of 2014. Unfortunately, due to an injury, PSD Ranger retired in January of 2018.

PSD Scout was assigned to Constable Kari Drake and the two have been assisting the Brantford Police Service, the community, and partnering Police Services for over six years.  The skill and abilities this team have demonstrated during that time have received accolades and commendations from across the entire PSD community, making Scout and Sgt Drake highly respected within this field.
 
Highlights of Scout’s distinguished career with the Brantford Police Service include:
  • Numerous successful incidents with regard to tracking/area searches for armed suspects involved in homicides, shootings, stabbings, robberies, and serious assaults.
  • Numerous arrests/apprehensions of violent and armed individuals. During one incident in particular, Scout and his handler, Sergeant Kari Drake were credited with preserving the lives of Waterloo Regional Police Service Emergency Response Unit members.  This occurred during a search for an armed homicide suspect with a shot fired.
  • A number of large scale multi-jurisdictional projects including, but not limited to:
      • Project RX/BATTERY (Toronto Police Service)
      • Project COLLECTEUR (RCMP)
      • Project KRAKEN (Toronto Police Service)
      • Project SINDICATO (York Regional Police Service) and
      • Project CARBON (Brantford Police Service)
  • Successful investigations involving the detection of numerous firearms, illegal substances, and millions of dollars in Canadian currency classified as proceeds of crime.
  • Successful tracking of a number of lost/vulnerable persons during ground searches.  All searches ensured lost person(s) were reunited safely with their loved ones.
Scout is still in great health and is happy living with his handler, Sergeant Kari Drake.
On behalf of all of us at BPS, we thank Scout for his service and wish him a long and happy retirement.

OVER $165,000 IN ILLEGAL DRUGS SEIZED FROM STREET CRIME UNIT ARREST

On Friday, November 13, 2020, members of the Brantford Police Service Street Crime Unit and the Major Crime Unit entered into a firearms investigation. As a result of the investigation a Criminal Code search warrant had been obtained and executed at a residence on Wayne Drive in the City of Brantford with the assistance of the Brantford Police Emergency Response Team, Canine Unit, and uniformed members of the Brantford Police Service.

During the search of the residence officers seized a quantity of cocaine, crack cocaine, and methamphetamine, a restricted firearm with ammunition, and a quantity of cash and other offence related property. The following items were seized:

  • 593 grams (approx.) of suspected cocaine with an approximate street value of $59,320
  • 25 grams (approx.) of suspected crack cocaine with an approximate street value of $2,510
  • 22.6 grams (approx.) of suspected methamphetamine with an approximate street value of $3,390
  • 5,683 grams (approx.) of suspected cannabis with an approx. street value of $56,830
  • 4,347 grams (approx.) of suspected cannabis edibles with an approx. street value of $43,470

The total estimated street value of drugs seized from the investigation is $165,520.

As a result of this investigation, a 34 year old male from Brantford has been charged with the following:
  • Possession for the Purposes of Trafficking x3
  • Possession of Cannabis for the Purposes of Distribution
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Restricted Firearm
  • Possession of a Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Restricted Firearm
  • Careless Storage of a Firearm
  • Careless Storage of Ammunition
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime

The accused has been held for a bail hearing.

Drug Seizure and Trafficking Charges

Incident 20-44044

On Monday, November 9, 2020 at approximately 12:20 am, Brantford Police Service received a 9-1-1 call to report an elderly male in medical distress at a residence in the area of East Avenue.
 
Officers attended the scene to check on the well-being of occupants. All appeared in order within the residence with no occupants found in medical distress.
 
Upon arrival, officers observed a male attempting to flee police. Investigation revealed that this individual was subject to a court ordered recognizance and two court ordered probation orders. The male was located in breach of conditions of these orders.
 
Further investigation found the male in possession of the following items, which were seized by officers:
  • 8.2 grams (approx.) of cocaine with an approximate street value of $820
  • 4 percoset pills with an approximate street value of $20
  • Approximately $3700 in Canadian currency
 
As a result of the investigation, a 19 year old male from Ohsweken is charged with the following:
  • Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act x 2
  • Breech of judicial release order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Breech of probation contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada and
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under the Criminal Code of Canada
 
The accused is currently being held for bail.

BPS Continue to Investigate Train Fatality

Incident #20-43964 - UPDATE
 
BPS would like to advise the public that the deceased male has now been identified. Police will not be releasing the identity of this individual out of respect for the family.
 
As the investigation continues, police are looking to hear from anyone who may have information or happened to be in the vicinity of the rail tracks at Usher Street between the hours of 11:00 pm Saturday, November 7, 2020 and 10:30 am Sunday, November 8, 2020.

Original Release - November 8, 2020

Just before 10:30 a.m. this morning Brantford Police responded along with fire and ambulance to the area of the CN rail tracks on Usher Street, Brantford for a report of an individual struck by a train.  

Upon arrival, a male was located and pronounced deceased at the scene.  The Brantford Police traffic section and Criminal Investigation Section are currently working with CN Police to investigate the incident and anticipate being on scene for the next few hours.  

Police have yet to identify the individual at this time and have no additional information.

A follow up media release will be made available once more information is known.  Police ask that members of the public stay out of the area at this time.
